OH IT’S ON! BIG TIME!

The calendar is out, it has been unveiled and now the athletes can big their rigorous training regime to ensure they can pip the others to the post and WIN the champions freeride comp.

This year, more so than ever, the FWT team should use every comp stop as a chance to celebrate the lives of the 2 incredible riders that we lost this year, Estelle Balet and Matilda Rapaport. The Freeride World Tour and the Freeride World Qualifiers- that I am a part of are, in their essence, an insanely awesome competition series to be a part of. There is, generally speaking, a lot of LOVE, FRIENDSHIP and GENUINE SUPPORT AND HAPPINESS FOR THE SUCCESS OF OTHER PARTICIPANTS. That is another reason why the freeride world is separate to that of the freestyle. The vibes are great and seen as we a small but buzzing industry, we are about the celebration of this progressive and demanding sport which is FREEride. Estelle and Matilda would want everyone in the FWT and FWQ to continue, with a sense of mindfulness and a new understanding for the elements. These ladies were pioneers and continued to push females in the sport, even to their last days. That is why, this year, let us rejoice that we ever had the honor, the pleasure and the experience of having met or ridden with this incredible women.

So the set up is as followers:

Snooks Wear- Girl Power!

Snooks, Madness in the method.

Are you ready for the first of its kind, the UK pioneers of a women’s only ski and snowboard brand, for women by women! We can now say, bye bye butterflies, bye bye poker dots and certainly bye bye to gratuitous amounts of pink! Snooks, is a loud and proud brand, flying the flag for the Made in Britain label.

I wanted to take a bit of time to tell all you lovely readers of the Ski Club GB blog, about these ladies because they are starting something that has been long over due. I don’t want to go on a rant about the boundaries and separations in the Snow sports industry, as Susie Beere and Sophie Kelly are not about that, they are not so concerned about the boys; they are more of the `Boys, you do you`, mind set, Susie and Sophie are about looking after the best interest of us girls while out on the mountain.

Who are Snooks and How did they come about?

Sick of buying from the men’s sections, the girls noticed a gap in the market. For myself, I have never been a fan of what I call the “Eurofit”- although I am thoroughly proud of my body, I don’t want my snowboard gear to emphasise the curves, that’s for Friday nights in Leeds. Most of what is available on the market doesn’t, for example, cover your bum, feel loose but comfortable around your chest and hips and worst of all, shows what you ate for breakfast. Snooks is for girls who like a more edgy, cool and relaxed fit, which doesn’t seem to be so readily available for girls.  Then Susie and Sophie had a little conflab and decided it was the right time to start a business together; a company that would focus on the concept of- for women, by women-  and I think these ladies have it bang on so far.

What is the drive and why is the “Made In Britain” label so important?

The first range is focussed on fit and that is the essential idea that started the whole concept. Then Sophie and Susie addressed some of the most important factors in fit and naturally, headed off the tailors first. They worked together to design something that’s practical and obviously super cute, products that allow plenty of room for layers underneath while still being flattering and comfortable. They manufacture outerwear in the UK, ensuring their gear is super high quality and they are proud to carry the Made in Britain label- these days this label means a lot more, being more environmentally friendly and promoting that all important British craftsmanship.

Susie says, “We hope to grow as a brand that not only represents the female skiers and snowboarders we design for and break down some gender stereotypes that have passed their sell by date… We understand that most female riders don’t want gear covered in pink butterflies, glitter and pretty flowers. Female riders are about way more than that.” Boom, well said Susie!

What so important about promoting women over men?

Sophie says, “It is important to us to celebrate women’s achievements in action sports, especially snowboard and skiing, whether it’s British athletes smashing it on the podium, or your first timer stacking it on a kicker. Hey at least you tried! We want to reflect this in our marketing. Representative not idealistic. . . . ”

I think men have it covered, in the UK in particular, we have some incredible male athletes in the snow sports sector, Billy Morgan, Jamie Woods to name but two, showing the world what British athletes have to offer but now its time for a little female promotion. That Is what Snooks want, as a brand they want to shout about female achievement, however little or big, yayyy for the lasses!

How does the Future look for Snooks?

Winter 2016/17 looks like its going to be THE winter for these girls. Now live online with their first line we can get in there and get our outfits for next winter sorted with some awesome prices. These ladies will be touring across the country, so that everyone will get the chance to find out a little bit more about this amazing brand. The Full Moon Yoga Retreat with Kelly Brooks Yoga

Yoga for snowboarding, a combination that has changed the way I ride.

I am so glad yoga came into my life, a force of peace and tranquillity. I started practising yoga about a year ago, in a time where I felt I needed something to help rationalise, well, everything in my life. After last season, I know my competitive career was a success, I still doubted myself, I still looked for gaps in everything I did, when I should have been commending myself for working hard and reaping the rewards. Yoga helped me look inwards, find the appreciation, the serenity and peace I needed. Separately this winter season where the success and failures in my snowboarding career have been totally different, I again turn to yoga for the support.

Yoga is a way of life, its not Jennifer Aniston drinking vegan smoothies, its not going to a class once a week and saying you got all zen from that 1 hour. Although, I’m sure Kelly would agree, everyone must be encouraged to take part and do whatever they need to do to fit yoga into their lives; but for me as a professional athlete, I don’t want to be a cafeteria yogi, I want to try and embody every aspect to ensure I have all the resources I need to be a better athlete. That is why the yoga retreat really changed so much for me. Being around similarly yogic people and embodying the lifestyle even down to the cuisine and the general “Vibe”, I wanted to carry it on to my everyday life.  What I mean is, exploring the options of a vegan diet, (as vegan as I can be living in Italy and being from an Italian family) certainly cutting out alcohol, allowing myself the sleep I need, being kind and honourable and doing all I can to really dedicate to my practice and clear my mind to let the yoga guide me.

But how does yoga benefit me as a snowboarder? I cant even begin to tell you how much. If I had to summarise my personal discipline (Freeride/backcountry snowboarding) in simplistic terms, you need strength, endurance and a sense of calm and pensive nature. Now, I had really only practiced Vinyasa yoga, but during the retreat, Kelly blew my mind to the wonders of Iyenger and Ashtanga yoga. These practices helped me explore new muscle groups, building on my strength, in the core and in the weaker areas of my arms. The yoga retreat helped me focus on my breathing; at the top of a couloir, about to drop in or while on a competition, I need calm. The focus on breathing and meditation has taught me skills I can use to really centre myself, I can think pragmatically and rationally but not only that, I have learnt to hold my poses for longer and really feel the power of yoga through ever corner of my body.

The retreat certainly inspired and motivated me. I am now equipped with more techniques to go forward into my summer season of training. Not only that but the retreat was sheer bliss, Chalet Rosiere have really got a good thing going, such a prime location, it’s quiet and set back away from the main hustle and bustle of La Rosiere, Ian the chef was on point, every meal exceeding the last and Kelly- well, Kelly is my guide, her calm and serene nature was just what I needed to discover my inner yogi. The combination of deep house too was incredible. Kelly has really given a lot of thought into exactly what house she chooses, eg. Odesza, a group that have very deep and contemplative music and beat was very helpful for when you are practising longer poses.

If you are lucky enough to live in London get yourself to her classes as you well see a new side to yourself and your yoga ability and if you have ever wanted to combine the incredible sports of skiing and snowboarding with yoga then you simply must join on the next retreat, it was a life changer.

Hey Everyone,

I thought it would be a great time to give you all a little update on the All girls Freeride Project and my filming and collaborative work with Fatmap and other sponsors.

I am a little late with this update but better late than never right, plus its not like you readers hang on every word I say and are very disappointed indeed with the fact its a 2 weeks after the filming and now I’m telling you about it. Any who, before the beautiful and lovely Tijn jetted off back to Amsterdam for work, we drove over to Verbier to try and gather some footage for our film. We heard on the grape vine that the snow was epic and we had a small window before a.) The temperature rose and killed the pow and B.) All the lines became cut up. So off we went, and my gosh am I glad we did. Not only did we get some excellent footage for the snow covered mountains but also we had for one day, knee deep powder. I cant even begin to tell you how grateful I am for that, that one day was enough to keep me going until the real snow arrives; which is now due to arrive on New Years day which I think is rather poetic. After that first freeski day we hooked up with the hero’s from Fatmap to take part in the filming for their promo Edit. I don’t want to give anything away but this short film will showcase to the world how awesome the app is and how it works, all the features and why its the only Mountain App you need. Team GB Sam Allen, Tijn and I showed the Verbier mountain who was boss that day! The edit will drop soon so hang on to your hats and helmets!

On the sponsor front I could not be happier, I am truly blessed at the moment by the opportunity to work with some amazing companies, of which I was the up most respect and excitement for. First up we have Vaude, hailing from Germany and recently named Germany’s most Eco friendly company they have been designing and creating bespoke products for over 40 years. They take pride in their products, boasting an ethic that puts nature and sustainability and the forefront of their company. If you are like me and love the outdoors and the preservation and growth of our environment then Vaude is the brand for you- oh and the clothes are super cool, FACT!

Then we have the most recent colab with MOJO clothing. Joe has been bossing it on the apparel front for a while now, if you check him and MOJO on Instagram you can see, their clothes are so well deigned they are not just for the mountain. I like my clothes bright and bold and MOJO is perfect for helping both you and I show the mountain our colourful personalities. For that I am stoked to be moving forward with this innovative brand!

So on that note, thanks everyone so far for all your support, you guys rock my world. Have a blooming smashing Christmas and keep the stoke. Winter is coming I just know it!

Hey Everyone and happy Friday,

I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to finally lay the rumours to rest and let the world know our plans.

I am so happy to tell everyone about our Movie making escapades. My beautiful and talented friend Tijn Vuijk and I will produce a freeride edit. The most important aspect is that it is ALL GIRLS and unlike the likes of the soon to drop Jamie Anderson full moon project, which I know will rock our worlds I’m sure; this edit is approachable, its about girls that you know, friends and ladies of the world who have desire, passion and strength to do exactly want they want to do. Tijn and I have ideas for how we want this to look; we want to be bright, colourful and girly- great outfits and europop. We want girls both in the snow sports world and out of it,to see the edit and and feel inspired about how fun and accessible freeride can be. This is a discipline that I survive on, I eat, sleep and dream of the best decent, this edit will show how to spot and plan the best lines, how to train and much more.  We have been over whelmed with the positive response so far with the Valle D’Aosta Tourist board and the Lift pass office, it seems this edit may just become the new official promo material for the valley, showcasing its culture, natural beauty and Freeride Potential as well as how clumsy and silly us girls are. Tijn and I have been super busy already trying to make the most of our time together, the snow is falling as we speak will beautiful, glorious flakes that will bless us with some amazing options for next week.

We will be posting regularly on Instagram, Facebook, twitter and on Youtube and Vimeo, so check out our progress and let us know what you think. We always want to hear peoples thoughts so don’t be afraid to share.

Hello Beautiful People,

I hope everyone is fairing well, here in Italy it’s proving to be a long hot summer but you’re surely not to hear any complaints from me. I just wanted to check in with you guys and ensure everyone is making the most of the summer, we can’t all count the minutes to winter; however it’s all gone a bit quiet in the twitter-sphere regarding pow shots and debates about whether the quad cork ruined snowboarding, (it didn’t but whatever).

In the mean time I’m trying to explore in more detail-

La Rocca

La Rocca

image image  a part of myself I thought was a myth, an unachievable reality if you will. I will begin by saying, a lot of my friends or colleagues along the years would argue they know me well, I just have one issue with this-they say I am hot headed and classically Italian in that way. However, whether that be the reality or not, due to my sufferings with anxiety, I never provoke people, I never enter in confrontation and tend to steer away from negativity as I can get so easily poisoned by it.

What as been helping, is what I spoke about in my last entry, YOGA! It rocks man, not only that I am trying to meditate. Everyone gets that feeling where you think your head could simply explored with all the thoughts in your head, both positive and not so. I have found meditation has helped me rationalise the thoughts, decide which need to be deblt with immediately or which I can discard as being of no benefit to me. I tend to simply sit on my matt in the cross legged position with some candles and now distraction and allow my thoughts to drift into a nothing. I give thanks to everything I have around me and remind my self to be grateful. It seems to be working, I feel relaxed.

I have been doing some cardio intense work-outs as well as it must be a balancing act to ensure I’m in the correct physical condition for the winter as well as mental. I cycle daily and last week completed a casual 60km without too much hassle. Today I did my own little triathlon, I cycle to Garda, a hike to La Rocca then a magical yoga session. I have attached some unimpressive snapshots. Don’t Judge to harshly.

On that note. . . . .

Sleep well all, remember to follow me on twitter and like my Facebook page AND THEN if you are not too exhausted from all the clicking, head to my YouTube page.

Peace and love.

Hey There beautiful people of the internet and beyond,

I do apologise for the delay in adding another post, things have been pretty hectic lately. However you now have my undivided attention.

The last week has been rather great, things are coming together at a rate I couldn’t even imagine possible and it has put me into a mind set I haven’t been in for a long time. For me as someone who lives their life as an emotional roller coaster and as a friend of mine recently reminded me I am unarguably a little crazy; calm, peace, serenity and tranquility, are words you do not associate.  The reasons for feeling this way are 3 fold: Part 1, I’m feel so at home when back in Italy, it’s such a massive part of my culture, my upbringing and my ancestry I feel at ease. I am back to nature, I’ve I have been one to like the indoors, I thrive on being outside, and here I have windsurfing, paddleboarding, MTB and climbing in my doorstep. Part 2, Career developments I guess you could call it. I have had some very exciting conversations indeed with some wonderful companies who want to support my progress and see what will happen this winter- I won’t say to much until of course they are comfortable with me doing so but you guys will be the first to know! Finally, Part 3, yoga- I can’t believe I’m just jumping on this band wagon now,  I thought everyone was being weird when they spoke about yoga as a concept, but I am so glad I am now learning to take the time for it. I feel so great, it’s not like any exercise or training I do normally but you feel an inner strength building. Before long you then feel your muscles grow and expand as your poses get stronger and your sequences get longer. I’m learning to centre myself and learn to live in the moment and enjoy all that is around me.

I encourage you to try it and you will see the inner and outer confidence grow.

One love to you all.

Hey wonderful people, check out my latest video edit of GOPROHERO4 footage. It was a lot of fun this winter with plenty of amazing people, so I hope it is as fun to watch as it was to make, probs not but whatever, its a figure or speech man, get off my back! Seriously though, everyone who was in this edit made the season just incredible and I’m so stoked for next winter!

Having an odd day, when you live your life like an emotional roller-coaster then most days turn out to have a modicum of highs and lows and today was no different. It is my 23rd birthday today and I know full well I have so much to be grateful for; for a big start I am young, fit and I have my health in totality but yet in a classic 1st world way I will of course find something to complain about.

I am coming to a sad conclusion about one aspect of my life, this one aspect you cant always talk about out loud; everyone will have an opinion on what should be done and how you should be, I feel that maybe this blog could be my only free pass to empty my heart of whatever I am feeling. My feelings control everything I do, especially when it comes to my snowboarding.

My friends who have stuck around for a few years will know exactly what I am talking about. This may sound ridiculous but in this particular part of my life I am realising I am just “too Italian”.  I want to be discrete so I will say just this; I know when you live a transient life style sometimes it can be very hard to form relationships, or indeed ones that last. I have always lived my life to extremes, in love, in sport, with friends, with food, I am 100% Italian passion. I wear my heart on my sleeve and have it broken more times than I have had Spaghetti Bolognese. For the rest of my life and for every adventure I come across I will treat every new individual or experience as if I have never been hurt or ever been sad. That’s right? Right?

Any how, back to the title of this blog post, it is relevent I promise I just needed a quick rant, however it has pushed me to feel my current circumstances are exactly right for me. I quit my job here in Leeds, for all you Leedionians out there, I salute you, this city is amazing but I am not cut out for the trend following, make-up wearing, “I want it now” city dwelling antics you guys are used to, I am ready for the next chapter. I have been back in touch with a dear friend of mine, who has offered me a place to return to lake Garda as a guide. Checking on guests, running excursions around the area and mostly hanging by the lake with my friends.

I do have other motivation for spending the last 3 months of the summer there, its another 1st world problem. . . I am a sad sad poor little unfunded athlete. I am unashamedly “touting” as my father would say, for more sponsors going forward to next winter. I checked once more on the Freeride World Tour rankings and I am Number 1 UK entrant in the Qualifier series, and I am so over the moon that I have achieved that ranking but my gosh did it cost a pretty penny. I travelled all over to different comps but next winter my plan is to visit even more counties, I plan to hit: Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, France, Slovenia, Italy and maybe North America; some places I’ve been, some I haven’t but my dream for the winter is to try, maybe fail but also maybe succeed in these wonderful destinations.

I had promised a summer of training, getting mentally and physically ready for the winter and I feel Lake Garda is the perfect place to start. I worked there a few years ago in the North and that is why I am so stoked at the prospect of getting back on my mountain bike, back to windsurfing, Stand Up Paddle Boarding and some yoga. What better scenic back drop to get back on the fitness track this summer. I plan to absorb every single thing that happens and let it educate me in some way, treat every new person with respect and love and enjoy every day. Then maybe if I blog and Tweet, Facebook, and Instagram enough, a protencial sponsor will think ” that gal is hella cool, she totally deserves a new sponsor for the winter”.  I imagine they will say that in a slight Americanised accent and be wearing a tall t and high tops at the same time.

Oh well, thats the dream, for Monday and Tuesday before my departure on Wednesday I’m not going to let the Leeds girl inside me go just yet, I’m going to have to give my self a mani-pedi as I need those nails look cute while on my SUP and I will also need to work on my base tan with some tanning oil in the back garden. . . . Don’t look at me like that man, I lived in this city where the girls are scarily like the ones of Newcastle for 17 yrs before I discovered I was a total hippie!

have a lovely week all.
