“I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.” —Maya Angelou

Today I wanted to share with you, my most inspiring and empowering female friends. These women are next level. Along the way, I have met them, known them and learnt from them and that is what is truly beautiful. These days, it’s so easy to become competitive and see every female as a “threat”, this notion is ridiculous to me. We should cheerlead one another to ensure that no matter where you are at in your life that you recognise an achievement of your fellow women, then you will surely find that you begin to feel empowered and encouraged. Together we are a team, we are queens, total badasses and YOU ARE “ONE OF US”.

First up: Tijn Vuijk

Although the snow conditions have not yet offered Annika and I the best conditions, I am over the moon she will be killing it in the Freeride World Qualifiers this year! She will be making her debut in Chamonix, a resort she knows well. She rides like a total bad ass and she slays on the daily. This season will be epic as we get to share it together! Going Vegan, Yoga and My Summer Training-Part 1

activity, adventure, body image, bodypositive, cardio, girlpower, good vibes, gym, health and fitness, lifestyle, positivity, running, snowboarding, Training, Travel, Uncategorized, vegan, wellbeing, winter, wintersport, women in sport, workout, Yoga

Hey wonderful people.

It had been just too long. I am so sorry I have been totally MIA recently, I have completely neglected my social media but it’s okay because it think it was totally needed. I was having a tough time at the end of last winter, many issue with my own well-being and mental strength and the future for my competitive career.  I was so eager to come home, get back to my sanctuary, with the family and in control of my own destiny again. So after a few weeks at home and I can come back to you guys fresh faced and ready to go.

Okay so I make a little check list in my mind, what I needed to address in my life in order to move forward and be the best version of myself I can be.  On the list was:

1, My out look and general well-being

2, My diet for building strength and training regime

3, Yoga and exploring the possibilities

4, Social Media

Not a very long list, but a list where all topics could lead to a happier and healthier me.

I will be talking over all these topics in the coming weeks but I wanted to take this particular blog post to talk about my decision to go Vegan.

Not one I took lightly, this is whole heartedly been the second best decision of my life, after deciding to take part in competitive big mountain snow boarding of course. I know I am only 2 weeks in but I could not be happier. I had a few courses of inspiration, the first were my good friends Ninni and Marta. These girls embody everything that is beautiful about vegan-ism and a general overall yogic lifestyle. These girls are beautiful, lovely skin, killer bodies but also kind natured, selfless and a pleasure to be around, I think being a vegan promotes a sense of greater understanding; for not only the environment but the value of life. The second inspiration was Full Moon Yoga retreat. Although, over at Chalet Rosiere you don’t eat exclusively Vegan, (we do have some light diary products)- the vibe, promoted by the gorgeous ex model and yogi Alex Volkers and her hero of a hubby Philip Volkers- they made their own probiotics, almond milk and explored the French Alps for the best health food shops, to ensure a balanced diet was served at their blissful retreat without needing meat or fish. Thirdly I discovered Yann Arthus-Bertrand- a documentarian, a humanitarian and my life’s inspiration. After watching all volumes of his documentary “Human” and then “Home”, a learned of the value of Human life, the preservation of our world and species, along with the enlightenment of our impact on the planet. With some self discovery, the realisation of my environmental impact came hurling toward me. Now I don’t have a car, I live in the Alps in the Winter, I recycle and I wouldn’t have said I was a massive contributor to the issue, but I realise it’s that mentality which has caused to much harm. Now adopting a Vegan diet to aid my summer training regime, I now know how to do my little bit to help save the planet; I save 1100 gallons of water 10lbs of CO2 emissions and one animals life PER DAY. To me that is more than good enough.

So what am I eating, well luckily my mum instilled within me a passion for food and cooking, safe to say I have not suffered. I have greatly enjoyed trying new ingredients and replacing protein etc with new experimental ingredients. Chia seeds man, who knew! I have attached some pictures so you can see:

The Full Moon Yoga Retreat with Kelly Brooks Yoga

Yoga for snowboarding, a combination that has changed the way I ride.

I am so glad yoga came into my life, a force of peace and tranquillity. I started practising yoga about a year ago, in a time where I felt I needed something to help rationalise, well, everything in my life. After last season, I know my competitive career was a success, I still doubted myself, I still looked for gaps in everything I did, when I should have been commending myself for working hard and reaping the rewards. Yoga helped me look inwards, find the appreciation, the serenity and peace I needed. Separately this winter season where the success and failures in my snowboarding career have been totally different, I again turn to yoga for the support.

Yoga is a way of life, its not Jennifer Aniston drinking vegan smoothies, its not going to a class once a week and saying you got all zen from that 1 hour. Although, I’m sure Kelly would agree, everyone must be encouraged to take part and do whatever they need to do to fit yoga into their lives; but for me as a professional athlete, I don’t want to be a cafeteria yogi, I want to try and embody every aspect to ensure I have all the resources I need to be a better athlete. That is why the yoga retreat really changed so much for me. Being around similarly yogic people and embodying the lifestyle even down to the cuisine and the general “Vibe”, I wanted to carry it on to my everyday life.  What I mean is, exploring the options of a vegan diet, (as vegan as I can be living in Italy and being from an Italian family) certainly cutting out alcohol, allowing myself the sleep I need, being kind and honourable and doing all I can to really dedicate to my practice and clear my mind to let the yoga guide me.

But how does yoga benefit me as a snowboarder? I cant even begin to tell you how much. If I had to summarise my personal discipline (Freeride/backcountry snowboarding) in simplistic terms, you need strength, endurance and a sense of calm and pensive nature. Now, I had really only practiced Vinyasa yoga, but during the retreat, Kelly blew my mind to the wonders of Iyenger and Ashtanga yoga. These practices helped me explore new muscle groups, building on my strength, in the core and in the weaker areas of my arms. The yoga retreat helped me focus on my breathing; at the top of a couloir, about to drop in or while on a competition, I need calm. The focus on breathing and meditation has taught me skills I can use to really centre myself, I can think pragmatically and rationally but not only that, I have learnt to hold my poses for longer and really feel the power of yoga through ever corner of my body.

The retreat certainly inspired and motivated me. I am now equipped with more techniques to go forward into my summer season of training. Not only that but the retreat was sheer bliss, Chalet Rosiere have really got a good thing going, such a prime location, it’s quiet and set back away from the main hustle and bustle of La Rosiere, Ian the chef was on point, every meal exceeding the last and Kelly- well, Kelly is my guide, her calm and serene nature was just what I needed to discover my inner yogi. The combination of deep house too was incredible. Kelly has really given a lot of thought into exactly what house she chooses, eg. Odesza, a group that have very deep and contemplative music and beat was very helpful for when you are practising longer poses.

If you are lucky enough to live in London get yourself to her classes as you well see a new side to yourself and your yoga ability and if you have ever wanted to combine the incredible sports of skiing and snowboarding with yoga then you simply must join on the next retreat, it was a life changer.

Finally, it seems winter has returned to us and I couldn’t be happier. Every thing seems to be falling into place which means its time to get my focus back onto filming and making this all girls edit happen. The lovely Tijn is bringing her Dutch Freeriding butt back to me so we can have a few days getting as much done as we can. I am so looking forward to a fun packed schedule, which I am just refining as we speak. The weather seems to be on our side for the most part, giving us 2 weather windows on Monday and Tuesday- giving us a chance to do some helidrops, ski all my favourite lines and do some very much deserved eating and drinking. With the help of the locals and some of my favourite spots in town and on the mountain, we should be able to get some much needed material, to showcase this incredible town. Tijn will be back in the end of March and then we can continue filming and perhaps expand our efforts to my other top spots of Courmayeur, Champoluc and Gressoney. Until then, check out our schedule and if you are around come and join us!

Today was such a great day I simply had to share it with you guys. We have been waiting with baited breath for almost 3 months for the winter to truly arrive and it seems, finally, it has.

The snow is falling in big generous flakes that have covered the ground with a magical, ethereal white blanket and this meant but one thing- it was time to ride!

Sadly the wind was not on our side today and so we began the day in my apartment with the guys,  talking over options.  As Freeriders, this is a massive part of our day and should be for any back country lovers.  Your group should discuss options and ideas openly well before you hit the mountain. We discussed heading to Courmayeur as they too have enjoyed the arrival of the snow but instead we thought we would go on a touring adventure.
I don’t have a split board at the moment so instead the guys convinced me they would go easy on me and I would follow with snowshoes. We chose a route that lead us around the forest and finally landing us in the sub area of Cervinia named Cielo Alto.

As soon as we began it became clear that the conditions were simply ideal. Steady temperature and no wind in the trees meant for a more reliable snowpack- suggesting that our run down would be just dreamy. The guys didn’t quite go as easy on me as I hoped, I was running off testosterone and my competitive nature to ensure I kept up with them as best I could.  I had sweat dripping down my face luckily the big fat smile I had meant it dripped straight onto the floor and away from my eyes and mouth!  It was hard work in parts so much so I did let out some exhausted sighs but the views were simply wonderful and kept me focused.

The lifts slowly began to open and the wind did die down so we changed our plan to head to the mean area after we reached our goal height. When we got there, with the matterhorn in our sights we enjoyed a short but rad run down.  I did a cliff  drop with a little too much speed meaning I had a knee to the face. There was blood and it was not pretty but I’m told that is referred to as a nature hit which made me feel super cool!

The rest of the day was spent shedding the lines that the tourists hasn’t ruined, until my legs could no longer carry me. Now I’m sat writing to you grinning at the weather forecast. It seems things are certainly looking up.

Peace and love

Positive Body Image and Training Update

activity, adventure, backcountry, big mountain, bodypositive, cardio, cervinia, europe, fatshame, fitness, freeride, freeride world tour, girlpower, good vibes, gym, Italy, Meditation, mountains, nature, offpiste, outdoors, peace of mind, positivity, powder, running, ski, skiing, snowboard, snowboarding, snowsport, sport, strength, Switzerland, Training, Travel, Uncategorized, wellbeing, winter, winterseason, wintersport, workout, Yoga, zermatt
So its that time of the weekly/semi regular posts. Things have been crazy busy lately between coming back from Verbier and going straight to Pila to work I am just now settling back into some semblance of a normal life. I am a lazy girl at heart so I have been craving for some me time, just sitting, no small talk no instgram, just either a book or a film and quiet time.
During all the fun days shredding around on the mountain and drinking beers with good friends and interacting with certain people, I have been thinking a lot about this positive body image. By that I don’t just mean me trying to be like my size 8 friends or trying to compete with people in town for who is the best on the mountain, I mean a sense of mental and physical comfort in myself. I have spent years never feeling truly right, truly comfortable.
People say that there comes a point in your twenties when you start to care less and not put so much importance on the opinion of others regarding who you are, but genuinely believing in yourself. That is slowly starting to happen, and my god its a long time coming. I am trying to nurture this part of me that sees me for how I want to be seen. Having the idea and the notion that athletes come in different variations of muscular form, different stature but none the less impressive.
Learning to believe that positive body images comes from mental strength and not just a physical. When that mental strength comes and so will the physical.
I used to think I had to hear someone say how slim I was or how I wasn’t fat or even have a boy acknowledge how pretty and sexy I was, but I don’t care. I just don’t, any more.
Success is coming to me in my career as I have begun to feel less inadequate. I now feel that if you don’t know; how hard I have worked, how ambitious I am, how driven I am, how impressive I am both physically and mentally,
then, well, you do you but you wont have me as a companion. I am awesome, I am strong and I am beautiful so that’s that really.
Training lately hasn’t been anything too exotic. It’s been my regular combination of trail running 2 or 3 times a week mixed with yoga sessions as much as I can cram them in, even if its a 20 minute apres ski session or an indulgent mediation session, I still feel it helps feed my soul.  In terms of on the mountain training, we are trying to ride as fast and as crazy as possible even if I do make rookie errors, like I did today- You can’t ride box on your toe edge. . . . . . I am trying to gather as much technique as I can to employ my #gobigorgohome mentality, readying myself for the comps in all conditions even if that means riding s***f*** which is what is on offer currently.
The next adventure will take me to Artesina Freeride Fest in just about 2 weeks. This will be the perfect laid back chilled environment for me to test some on my new tricks and put my new mentality to the test. Not only that but I am beyond excited to have my awesome roommates coming to compete with me. I know they are going to smash it, but together we can plan lines, talk cliffs and drops and take that mountain by storm.
For now, lovely people, have a great week
Peace and Love

Hey Team,

So I few things, it kinda all seems to be kicking off a little bit lately, without sounding too “Leeds”, I don’ know whether I’m coming or going.

3 Wonderful things I have to report on: 1, Verbier Freeride week- done and dusted, I want to say #nailedit but I did’nt quite, I shall write a small review tomorrow so hang tight for that. 2, My blog has been ranked top 5 snowsports blogs in the UK, what’s that about man, is anyone actually reading this, actually reading this, I cant quite believe it as it leads me to believe either you guys are a sucker for an abomination of a contribution to the written word or I am okay at writing my thoughts. Its in the running at the moment to be Numero uno! Follow this link and head for the “Snow-Sports” tag and click on me!

Pretty please with a cherry on top?

3, The Fatmap edit I told you guys about, its finally out! I am over the moon. I don’t want to get all soppy and wishy washy on you, but I did blush and get VERY girly and giggerly indeed. Its awesome. The production, the setting and the advertisement of the app is incredible. However most personally to me I don’t look aweful, I am super stoked so you simply must check it out and get that app downloaded! It genuinely is the bets app I have ever seen, apart from the word press app of course! And Instagram maybe! If you are a seasonnaire or if you are heading on your jollies this winter, this is the one and only mountain companion you need, showing you routes, helping you track your friends and giving you all the info you could need to maximise your time on the mountain.

In the mean time, Im off to Pila for a few days to work, yes sometimes I work right, I will try my very best not to break a nail or pull a muscle as I’m a princess dont-cha-know, well at least thats what my male roomies and my daddy tell me. . . . . they may have been lying to me.

Cutting the Excess

activity, adventure, avalanche safety, backcountry, bigmountain, bodypositive, cardio, cervinia, europe, fitness, freeride, freeride world tour, girlpower, good vibes, Meditation, mountains, nature, offpiste, peace of mind, positivity, powder, rehabilitation, relax, running, ski, Ski Mountaineering, skiing, skitouring, snowboard, sport, strength, Switzerland, Training, Travel, Uncategorized, verbier, wellbeing, winter, winterseason, wintersport, workout

So Verbier Freeride week have been postponed due to the snow, that is the only reason that I’m actually so happy to accept. Again, I have to say what a blessing it is that we have seen the snow for the first time this winter, winter is truly here. On that note and seen as we have begun the New Year, there is that inevitable self reflection that is necessary. It’s good for the soul and especially good for someone like me who strives to improve and be a better person at every opportunity.

This is why, as of late I have been having some thoughts about cutting out the excess, streamlining my life as it were, to make my life how I want it. I have these visions and dreams that I will be treated exactly how I treat others, they will pay me with the generosity, love and warmth that I pay them, however the literal reality is that, this is hardly ever the case. Luckily, over the years and this season too, I have collected a group of true and pure individuals who I know, genuinely want to see me prosper. In a sport like freeride, when so much emphasis goes on trust and stability in a relationship on the mountain, you learn what values are important off the mountain. Just how I would be patient and calm to take in all variants in the backcountry with my buddies; in regular life I hope for the same. I am understanding now, that I am not the problem, I am a good person and I know my nature is intrinsically fair and just; so now, to save my soul, to focus on my career and my riding, I need to refine my life and like I say, cut the excess.

I see this blog as a way of writing down my feelings and thoughts, I can rationalise something by writing it down, I know people have been interested by other posts I put up, particularly “The F Word”, I hope like that post, people can see what is important to me. If you know me and you are reading this, I hope you understand, if you are a fan or someone who follows my work, I hope you find this enlightening.

Do with it what you will, right now I plan to shred a little with my buddies and get my head in the right space, this season and in Verbier Freeride Week in particular, if I come first or last, I plan to charge it anyhow. . . . Or maybe flounce around in a move I like to call “The Dead Fish” Tm, copyright me. I believe they judges give point for that?

It’s Snowing!

activity, adventure, avalanche safety, backcountry, big mountain, cervinia, europe, fitness, freeride, freeride world tour, freestyle, girlpower, good vibes, gym, Italy, mountains, nature, offpiste, outdoors, positivity, powder, ski, Ski Mountaineering, skiing, skitouring, snowboard, snowboarding, sport, strength, Switzerland, Training, Uncategorized, verbier, Vindsurf, wellbeing, winter, winterseason, wintersport, workout, zermatt

It’s only gone and blooming started snowing! What a miracle, I can’t believe what a blessing this is; how poetic it is that as soon as the new year arrives that the snow does too. Not that I haven’t been having a lovely time, as I have, like I keep saying, my roommates are the best riding buddies in town. However I can’t say that I wasn’t worried about training in preparation for the competition season, which begins next week! Also Tijn and I haven’t been able to do much in the way of filming for our freeride movie on account of the fact there simply is no freeride. Now, everything is coming together nicely, I am stoked to say the least.

Over the past few days nearly a half meter has fallen and it just continues to fall, the forecast makes for simply dreamy reading with the blessed snow falling for the next week at least. More over, this Friday we may just be in with our first true freeride day with sun and blue skies and a fresh coating of nearly a meter by then. This does mean I need to get my arse in gear as we say in Yorkshire, by maximising my mountain time and ensuring I make the most of every day.

I looked at the Edits from Verbier Freeride week of last year and I felt a bubbling of excitment rush through me, the kid of excitement I used to get as a child when my parents agreed to take an overly excitable child to a theme-park. I don’t care if I fall, I don’t care if the conditions are not perfect, I feel so ready to shred as best as my short legs with let me and hang out with some awesome peeps! The other competitors in Verbier Freeride week rock so I’m sure it will be a super fun week.

Any how, That’s where I’m at, so all that is left to say is Peace and Love and enjoy the shred this week people!
