Ready For The Winter

Right, that’s it, I’m done, I’m out. I want to send an automated response email out to life that reads simply, “Gone Snowboarding- Expect delayed response, but don’t get your hopes up, see ya PEACE.”

DSC08118-2

I am so tired. I thought I would be totally fine working without a day off for 7/8 Months but it’s officially hit me. It will all slow down in October as I finish helping my parents out at their business and I will just be working with the charity and a few other social media jobs which I will say I LOVE. I am not for one second suggesting I don’t want to be doing what I’m doing, I am so lucky so work with some amazing brands helping with them get their message out to the world and I am so stoked to keep working with them until the cows come home.

BUT

I am hearing that call of the mountains. It’s literally all I hear day in day out. The other day- This is the most bitch ass story every- I saw a really cool photo of the Matterhorn and I CRIED LIKE A LITTLE BABY! Not one sorry trickle down my check while listening to cold play “Fix You”, nah, it was full blown tears.

Being home has taught me so much about myself, I have not spent this much time in the UK since I was 17 and that was 7 years ago. I am driving my parents mad but I have loved being with them, they are legit awesome people. I am also so grateful for finding the jobs I did, I didn’t have to work in a dead end job I hate for the summer, I have done something I love but I am ready for my next adventure.

That’s all really, all I wanted to say. The countdown is on, this weekend in Germany with my gal Kate Brady, then to Malawi with @LoveSupportUnite and then chilling at the ski and snowboard show with my pals at @snookswear and @fatmap.

Will be snap chatting the heck out of the beautiful cities on Bonn and Cologne this weekend and getting massively snap happy in Malawi so follow me on Instagram and Snapchat!

Conscious Caucasus – Europe’s Last Wilderness | VAUDE

S12_MG_0295_vaude_Bastian_Morell_r-600x400

Another absolutely incredible demonstration of Vaude’s deep and meaningful connection with the environment. This video features some really amazing females outdoor enthusiasts and all round athletes, but also helps us remember to be respectful of wherever we choose to ride and indeed whatever discipline that be in- whether it is Skiing/Snowboarding or MTB and hiking. This respect encompasses our literal environment foot print but also our impact on local wild life and and eco-system of the area.

I very often head to their YouTube page to watch their array of edits and promos as they all have a clear message. I am really loving how strongly they feature empowered females on the channel and this video is a top example.

Whats more you will learn a thing or two about Armenia, I think I speak for all of us when I say we could stand to gather a few more valuable factoids about this clearly beautiful and naturally ore inspiring country.

This is what Vaude had to say:

The Caucasus is perhaps Europe’s last wilderness. The mountain range between Europe and Asia is home to the Caucasus leopard, Europe’s last big cat, and many other endangered species. For over twenty years, the WWF has been helping to protect as much as possible of the Caucasus’ natural regions under threat from people and has been helping to make these areas available to the public for sustainable tourism. A great opportunity for bikers Sylvia Leimgruber and Susanne Huth. Together they set off to see learn about the WWF project and to personally experience the unique hospitality & culture of Armenia.

Summer Training- Part 2. The Plank Challenge.

Hello there folks,

How is everyone? Well I hope. I thought it was about time to check in with my Summer Training Update Part 2. This is totally something everyone can try and is NO WHERE NEAR AS HARD AS IT SOUNDS.

Recently, on Facebook the world record holder in the plank position showed up on my news feed, it’s like 8hrs or something crazy and I was flabbergasted to say the least. I struggle with my current timings of like a minute so that sounds just mental. Then later purely coincidentally I saw a post about planking for some seconds every day to improve toning and over all vitality. I read it and thought I would customise it to my own training standards (helping get Ski Season Ready). I personally do other exercise as well to aid in free riding but this is totally up to you, it’s simply a hopefully, helping suggestion.

So first before I tell you how to start the plank challenge, let’s review why it can be  beneficial for you:

1.) Planking is a body weight exercise that requires no money investment, very little time, no equipment and allows you to see the results happen in a short space of time. That’s all the key ingredients of a good “workout” right? It’s certainly speaking my language!

2.) Planking, in conjunction with many other muscles, allows you to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Your abdominal muscles help strengthen your back and help protect against injury. In the snow sports industry, your back its suck an easy area to damage, so theoretically speaking, strengthen your tummy, help protect your back.

3.) Improve posture. This is ideal for skiers and snowboarders, as better posture means again, spinal strength and another step in the right direction of preventing injury.

4.) Planking is an excellent position to improve balance. Balance is the magic word in skiing and snowboarding. Having total strength and awareness of every muscle makes you so much more adapted to harder tricks and general over all agility in your descent, whether you are on piste or off. This is why I still profess every snow sport enthusiast should be supplementing their days on the hill with a short yoga session. But continuing on that theme, planking helps you isolate your abdominal muscles, your lower and upper back along with your bum! It helps you build on your balance through that inevitable, yet satisfying burn of holding a body weight exercise position.

5.) Get sweating! I don’t know about you guys but planking can certainly help me work up a sweat, especially if a full mixed position 20 min or so work out. Sweating when exercising for me, has a direct line to that illusive part of the brain that releases all the happy hormones. One way to help me feel in control, happy and poised is exercise. Sometimes if i need a little boost, I don;t need to go do a 60 min work out, I can simply do some of my favorite yoga poses or plank for a few minutes. This helps make me feel grounded and overall improves my personal vitality.

Okay so, sounding good so far? I haven’t lost too many of you right? Well then, let’s explain how you can get started right now. Do variations of these poses for as long or as little as you like. Do only a few of them or do all of them.

1.) Basic Plank- Down on your forearms, BUM DOWN and toes on the ground, Nice strong line and hold. Min 20 seconds. increase the amount of time the more confident you get or the more time you have.

Rest 10 Seconds

2.) Basic Push up Position- Palms on the ground, press up position, BUM DOWN and toes on the ground. Nice strong line and hold. Min 20 seconds. Increase the amount of time the more confident you get or the more time you have.

Rest 10 Seconds

3.) Twist Plank- Take the principles from Basic Push Up and twist your hips from side to side. Don’t dip all the way to the ground but stretch left to right so you can feel your external obliques (The lower side muscles in your tummy).  Min 20 seconds. Increase the amount of time the more confident you get or the more time you have.

Rest 10 Seconds

4.) Raised Leg Plank- Take the basic principles of the Basic Plank and swap between raising your left leg then your right leg. Keep your weight nice and grounded through the foot touching the ground and the raised leg should be extended out nice and strong.

Rest 10 Seconds

5.) Side Plank- This one is a little more tough balance wise. However once you have it, its great, its probably my favourite now. Keep one palm down on the ground nice and sturdy. Eg, start with left hand palm down then with stability and strength place the left foot on it’s side and stack the right foot on top. Then right arm up in the air, shoulders in line. Then swap over. Another variations of this include; Incorporating a great yoga position is to raise the top foot and leg to a 45* angle to the grounded leg- If you can, grab your big toe of the raised leg with your peace fingers on the extended arm.

My gal @erinellisx showing us how it’s done in Italy. Looking super strong, toned and fit!

THAT IS IT! There are of course many more variations of plank but this is my favourite sequence and already after a short amount of time my stomach feels leaner and it’s great to do while watching a bit of Netflix!

Sweaty Betty, My Go-To WorkOut Wardrobe. #SweatYourStyle

Hey Team,

(This blog post it one for the lasses; lads I imagine you will find this mind numbingly boring- BUT if you have a girlfriend who works out, maybe you will think Sweaty Betty next time you fall out with her, you can bribe her with fitness leggings!)

So how is everyone? Well I hope. So today I wanted to do a super brief blog just to tell you about one of my favourite brands for workout gear. As you guys well know, training as such a massive part of the down season lifestyle for me; as I imagine for all you skiers and snowboarders out there, whatever your ability, you should be doing regular exercise. Exercise not just for a sense of well being and vitality but also to ensure you can ride all day long and avoid that pesky end of day fatigue . I have been working out at home mostly using weights, skipping and my own circuit training. However I decided that I really want to maximise why muscle weight gain so I am heading back to the gym- I am going to blog about that too so watch this space.

I have thought that my workout wardrobe now consists of just one brad largely and that’s Sweaty Betty! For good reason too. Its not just yummy mummies and yoga instructors, the gear is functional and so gosh darn pretty that fitness enthusiasts such as myself still find it massively useful. I don’t know if you guys know- I am no wall flower, I am rather outgoing (Big surprise, I know- Bomb shell much) but Sweaty Betty have created a line that lets my personality shine through my workout wardrobe without holding me back.

A couple of the most important points:

  • For yoga, largely, unless specified, their leggings are 100% opaque. Downward dog to your hearts content without that oh so dissatisfying VPL. They range from slightly thicker and durable to thinner, lighter and really help enhance your poses.
  • For training their leggings are super supportive.  I have never been alarmed by the “tightness” but its not uncomfortable, they help you focus on your workout all the while your bum looks just fab! Their practical tops are brilliant too. In a range of sweat wicking and sensitive fabrics you can find something that ideal for you workout.

My favourite Items:

  • Zero Gravity Run leggings in Glacier Print. They have a pattern that is so beautiful and inspired by the mountains it makes me feel very melancholy. They are super supportive and are ideal for running outdoors or the gym.
  • The Stamina Bra. What an absolute staple. Coming in a variety of colours, for a varied workout from cardio to weights this is ideal for me, even with a bigger chest I still find it comfortable and the threading is really smart.
  • Pace setter Run Vest. These vests come in 3 colours this season but they are awesome. Super breathable and slightly sheer which make them cute too. I like to tie mine at the waist to add a little extra edge.
  • The Time Out Luxe Jacket. Is awesome! Literally Love it. I wear it all the time and it is perfect going to and from the gym or any activity. I wear it daily too and with is structured style it is still smart looking. Not only that its really good with perspiration.
  • Swiftie Run Cap. As most of you who follow me on Snapchat know- I am a massive baseball cap fan, in fact you name it, snapback, trucker cap HATS HATS HATS, I LOVE THEM. But I have been wearing this cap almost too often. Its ideal when working out to keep your hair at bay but also allows you to maintain a cool and stylish look.

Their new season collection inspired by Iceland with a “Fire and Ice” theme is right up my street. I am of course more ice than fire, being a total mountain girl but all the cool winter colours are just sensational and this season is certainly my spirit collection. Instagram- You are about to get inundated with SB pictures!  Check out this promo.

Volunteering in Malawi with Love Support Unite. Good for the soul!

Now do I have a pretty big update for you lovely people!

So some of you may know that I have been working along side Love Support Unite charity and the the brand Love Specs. I have been helping them with their social media as gosh knows, I love social media. It is a truly beautiful organisation and It in genuinely  a labor of love. All the late nights and many hours spent on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now Snapchat too- is just wonderful as the path that we are is one that leads to promise and to the future.

Who are Love Support Unite?

Trying to steer clear of the word charity in it’s most literal sense, Love Support Unite are more of a meeting of minds. With 6 pillars of hope and plans for the future, they try to change lives for communities in Malawi. Malawi being top 10 world’s poorest country, yet a country so full of culture, potential and bursting at the seams with love; is a country that needs a little helping hand. We don’t work for them, we work with them, helping them empower themselves and find a genuine level of sustainability in all aspects of daily life, to ensure they can leave crippling poverty behind. Through: Clean water, clean energy, reliable crops, sustainable education, local business loans, medical care and even helping source materials for building work, care for children and overall improvement in the local community. Using the hashtag #YouAreLove, this empowering idea is putting love at the forefront. They raise money through you generous people, via one time or monthly donations but also through the sale of their product that embodies their ideas- Love Specs.

Donate at: http://lovesupportunite.org/donations/

Love Specs

Love Support Unite are Love Specs and Love Specs and Love Support Unite. Love Specs are really unique. These heart shaped glasses are love all over. Popular at festivals, parties and anyone who likes to be that little bit different; When you place the flip filter down, the glasses react with light and let you see hearts everywhere you look.- these glasses are beautiful inside and out. 100% of proceeds go to Love Support unite and with the original black specs being a snip at just £12 you can’t really say no. They have also brought out a new retro John Lennon esc pair that are too cool for school and really limited edition, PLUS a few times a year they come out with one of a kind, specials in purple, red and white!

Volunteering

Running their social media means being up close and personal in all aspects of Love Support Unite. Trying to understand what it must be like to live in Malawi and more over, try to thrive and grow for your family and your community. That is why, when they suggested I should go on the next volunteer trip in October I knew I had to go. I was worried about money; this winter I really need to focus and be committed, so I knew I needed to save money. However, I also knew that this summer has been a soul searching journey for me to becoming genuinely happy with myself and the world around me. This is the part of me that spoke and said I needed to do this to gain a better understanding of all that life encompasses, all that is out there- outside of the snow sports world. I want to live my life from a stance of compassion, love and care and I know that going to Malawi and being given to opportunity to see all parts of Love Support Unites’ work will help me grow and appreciate all that I am so lucky to have. This is something bigger and more important that me and I want to be just a teeny tiny part or making anyone’s life just a bit more easy.

So there you have it, for just 10 short days in October, right before the ski and snowboard show, I am jetting off to Malawi. I think the part I am most intrigued about is female empowerment. A subject so close to my heart I hope to help women in the communities in Malawi, see how all powerful and wonderful they are. I will be Snap chatting and filming while I am there so you can see for yourselves what incredible work Love Support Unite.

Progress. . . The F word doesn’t scare me anymore. It has a new meaning. . . Fitness.

Athlete, What does it mean. “WHO AM I. . .I DON’T KNOW”. -Insert Zoolander-

It is a question I have pondered many times before. I always felt a little wince inside me whenever I refereed to myself as such, not truly believing that I was one. Not only that but thinking people would look at me and not believe it. That was why I wrote those articles back in November when I had a run in with 2 people who said I was “too fat” to be an athlete.

But anyway, I wrote that article, you know the one, if not scroll down to older posts “The F word” so empower myself and others. We need to strive for overall health and vitality and not an idea of skinny or some kind of body goal. This message is all encompassing for people who are physically fit and are damn proud of a high level of fitness but people pick holes in their body shape.

Well I feel like I can finally say I am past ALL OF IT. Call me fat or don’t. I mean those who do, will get one of my famous scowls and a speech about how they perhaps need to look internally to understand what drives them to comment on superficial things like body shape but even if people say what an awesome body I have, thanks but I am not sure I need you to say it anymore.

Yes I have lost a lot of weight recently, not deliberately but through vegan eating and a new workout routine, I have just become more toned and everything is becoming that little bit, shall we say- tighter. I am stoked of course, not because I wanted to loose weight so badly but because I am striving for better health. I feel so light on my feet at the moment and the world has become such a bright place, “Oh pipe down you hippie lefty”- right? People normally tell vegans to pipe down when we start to talk about this kind of thing but you are reading this because you are interested?- well vegan eating cleared my achy totally!- it has helped me create new muscle definition, I feel generally calmer, mood swings are non existent and I feel so strong and genuinely POWERFUL.

With the continuation of my yoga practice, meditation and a state of mindfulness, paired with the clean eating (well most of the time) and little to no alcohol has lead me to a place of bliss.

What I am ready for now is to hopefully inspire others to become self aware, mindful and peaceful from within. I am also ready to smash my up coming projects. I am heading to Lake Garda in just a few days, after that I have the volunteer trip to Malawi, then the Ski show and finally winter begins. All is well.

Join me on my journey and follow me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Add me on snapchat too: Angelicasykes

I AM ON SNAPCHAT- It’s happening in a big way.

I am on SNAPCHAT!

I could leave it there, you know “I am on Snapchat, that’s it, the end!” But no, that’s not how I roll!

I am legit excited about this and I wanted to share it with all you beautiful and most radical blog readers, all 5 of you. I spend so much time on Snapchat and on social media in general both with work and with my own platforms as an athlete. I have the virtue of seeing how the industry moves and how quickly it changes. Now I love my socials, they all serve a good purpose, Facebook is for sharing all sorts of stuff I see, interesting snow sports content. Twitter is for interacting with my fav people and brands and Insta, well Instagram is my pride and joy. I work really hard to keep everything looking smart and to ensure the pictures really embody who I am as a rider and as a person. But Snapchat, that little wiley minx, is truly the instant social media app.

I love seeing what everyone is up to, especially like my yoga hero’s or other sports people. It also feels so personal when someone snaps to you or when you interact with your followers. I always snap people back if they send me a snap, well I certainly try! So add me, ask me questions, let me know what you are up too but also you will get to see what I am up to on the daily.

Whats coming up?

I am heading to Riva Del Garda for a week of filming on Yoga, Running, SUP and MTB. Through August I will be posting plenty of good foods from my new collab with a certain brand- which I will tell you about very soon. I will be training in Yoga, weights and cardio and then in OCTOBER I AM HEADING TO MALAWI ON A VOLUNTEER TRIP- More info of which is coming very soon so watch this space! THEN!!- Its time for the ski and snowboard show with the lovely people at @fatmapski and @snookswear (follow them on insta) and after I’m off back to Cervinia to start filming immediately. I will be tearing up that glacier like a vegan taco! ARGH CAPITAL LETTERS TO CONVEY MY EXCITEMENT AT HOW MUCH IS GOING ON! This winter is going to rock on so many levels.

Join me on my journey, lets be adventure buddies and get ready for the winter together.
