Right, that’s it, I’m done, I’m out. I want to send an automated response email out to life that reads simply, “Gone Snowboarding- Expect delayed response, but don’t get your hopes up, see ya PEACE.”

DSC08118-2

I am so tired. I thought I would be totally fine working without a day off for 7/8 Months but it’s officially hit me. It will all slow down in October as I finish helping my parents out at their business and I will just be working with the charity and a few other social media jobs which I will say I LOVE. I am not for one second suggesting I don’t want to be doing what I’m doing, I am so lucky so work with some amazing brands helping with them get their message out to the world and I am so stoked to keep working with them until the cows come home.

BUT

I am hearing that call of the mountains. It’s literally all I hear day in day out. The other day- This is the most bitch ass story every- I saw a really cool photo of the Matterhorn and I CRIED LIKE A LITTLE BABY! Not one sorry trickle down my check while listening to cold play “Fix You”, nah, it was full blown tears.

Being home has taught me so much about myself, I have not spent this much time in the UK since I was 17 and that was 7 years ago. I am driving my parents mad but I have loved being with them, they are legit awesome people. I am also so grateful for finding the jobs I did, I didn’t have to work in a dead end job I hate for the summer, I have done something I love but I am ready for my next adventure.

That’s all really, all I wanted to say. The countdown is on, this weekend in Germany with my gal Kate Brady, then to Malawi with @LoveSupportUnite and then chilling at the ski and snowboard show with my pals at @snookswear and @fatmap.

Will be snap chatting the heck out of the beautiful cities on Bonn and Cologne this weekend and getting massively snap happy in Malawi so follow me on Instagram and Snapchat!

Finally, it seems winter has returned to us and I couldn’t be happier. Every thing seems to be falling into place which means its time to get my focus back onto filming and making this all girls edit happen. The lovely Tijn is bringing her Dutch Freeriding butt back to me so we can have a few days getting as much done as we can. I am so looking forward to a fun packed schedule, which I am just refining as we speak. The weather seems to be on our side for the most part, giving us 2 weather windows on Monday and Tuesday- giving us a chance to do some helidrops, ski all my favourite lines and do some very much deserved eating and drinking. With the help of the locals and some of my favourite spots in town and on the mountain, we should be able to get some much needed material, to showcase this incredible town. Tijn will be back in the end of March and then we can continue filming and perhaps expand our efforts to my other top spots of Courmayeur, Champoluc and Gressoney. Until then, check out our schedule and if you are around come and join us!

Positive Body Image and Training Update

So its that time of the weekly/semi regular posts. Things have been crazy busy lately between coming back from Verbier and going straight to Pila to work I am just now settling back into some semblance of a normal life. I am a lazy girl at heart so I have been craving for some me time, just sitting, no small talk no instgram, just either a book or a film and quiet time.
During all the fun days shredding around on the mountain and drinking beers with good friends and interacting with certain people, I have been thinking a lot about this positive body image. By that I don’t just mean me trying to be like my size 8 friends or trying to compete with people in town for who is the best on the mountain, I mean a sense of mental and physical comfort in myself. I have spent years never feeling truly right, truly comfortable.
People say that there comes a point in your twenties when you start to care less and not put so much importance on the opinion of others regarding who you are, but genuinely believing in yourself. That is slowly starting to happen, and my god its a long time coming. I am trying to nurture this part of me that sees me for how I want to be seen. Having the idea and the notion that athletes come in different variations of muscular form, different stature but none the less impressive.
Learning to believe that positive body images comes from mental strength and not just a physical. When that mental strength comes and so will the physical.
I used to think I had to hear someone say how slim I was or how I wasn’t fat or even have a boy acknowledge how pretty and sexy I was, but I don’t care. I just don’t, any more.
Success is coming to me in my career as I have begun to feel less inadequate. I now feel that if you don’t know; how hard I have worked, how ambitious I am, how driven I am, how impressive I am both physically and mentally,
then, well, you do you but you wont have me as a companion. I am awesome, I am strong and I am beautiful so that’s that really.
Training lately hasn’t been anything too exotic. It’s been my regular combination of trail running 2 or 3 times a week mixed with yoga sessions as much as I can cram them in, even if its a 20 minute apres ski session or an indulgent mediation session, I still feel it helps feed my soul.  In terms of on the mountain training, we are trying to ride as fast and as crazy as possible even if I do make rookie errors, like I did today- You can’t ride box on your toe edge. . . . . . I am trying to gather as much technique as I can to employ my #gobigorgohome mentality, readying myself for the comps in all conditions even if that means riding s***f*** which is what is on offer currently.
The next adventure will take me to Artesina Freeride Fest in just about 2 weeks. This will be the perfect laid back chilled environment for me to test some on my new tricks and put my new mentality to the test. Not only that but I am beyond excited to have my awesome roommates coming to compete with me. I know they are going to smash it, but together we can plan lines, talk cliffs and drops and take that mountain by storm.
For now, lovely people, have a great week
Peace and Love

Hey Everyone and happy Friday,

I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to finally lay the rumours to rest and let the world know our plans.

I am so happy to tell everyone about our Movie making escapades. My beautiful and talented friend Tijn Vuijk and I will produce a freeride edit. The most important aspect is that it is ALL GIRLS and unlike the likes of the soon to drop Jamie Anderson full moon project, which I know will rock our worlds I’m sure; this edit is approachable, its about girls that you know, friends and ladies of the world who have desire, passion and strength to do exactly want they want to do. Tijn and I have ideas for how we want this to look; we want to be bright, colourful and girly- great outfits and europop. We want girls both in the snow sports world and out of it,to see the edit and and feel inspired about how fun and accessible freeride can be. This is a discipline that I survive on, I eat, sleep and dream of the best decent, this edit will show how to spot and plan the best lines, how to train and much more.  We have been over whelmed with the positive response so far with the Valle D’Aosta Tourist board and the Lift pass office, it seems this edit may just become the new official promo material for the valley, showcasing its culture, natural beauty and Freeride Potential as well as how clumsy and silly us girls are. Tijn and I have been super busy already trying to make the most of our time together, the snow is falling as we speak will beautiful, glorious flakes that will bless us with some amazing options for next week.

We will be posting regularly on Instagram, Facebook, twitter and on Youtube and Vimeo, so check out our progress and let us know what you think. We always want to hear peoples thoughts so don’t be afraid to share.

AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH

That’s literally all I have to say today. You know when you get so mad at yourself its amusing, well that’s where I am at with my life. I know I should pretend that its totally fine, all part of the training schedule but no, I am so mad at myself. Especially as my beautiful, wonderful and nauseating riding buddy Tijn landed it obviously. I also did that classically girly thing where I was said “oh well done, I’m so proud of you”, of course I am, deeply but then I had a little tantrum in the chair lift. When I say tantrum I mean I threw my gloves on the floor and my goggles got all foggy in the process. However I am totally over it now, its been a few hours and clearly I work fast, I AM SO OVER IT!

Seriously though, I will nail this. I know many people ride for the love and for the passion and while I also feel that way, I ride to train as its my life and everything is to better me towards my goal. Tomorrow I will head up again and it will happen! I will do the 360 and it will be so gosh darn pretty it will make people applaud me on the run down to the chair lift.

I hope.

PS. I have not attached a picture of my failed attempts as you guys simply do not need to see that!

The F word

activity, adventure, backcountry, bigmountain, bodypositive, fatshame, fitness, freeride, freerideworldtour, girlpower, Italy, snowboard, snowboaridng, Switzerland, Training, Travel, winter

Hey Everyone,

This is going to be a super cheesy blog entry, one that will make you feel as uncomfortable as me no doubt. However going forward into my career I wanted to make my feelings very clear, nor do I hope anyone mentions it to me again, as I have little to no desire to hear peoples opinions, on the other hand, I hope silently this may be just the thing someone needs to hear.

I will keep it breif then we can talk about all the other amazing stuff going on. The F word I am referring too is FAT. Sadly I’m sure many other “athletes” hear this word when it comes to training however its this term athlete which is making me feel so self concious. I am an athlete. I work out a lot, I am training often as my life revolves around it. I am strong and I am fit, however I do not and will never fit into a mould of the classic Olympian. I know it may seem like I am trying to justify myself here but I am not, I am simply saying “pipe down” to anyone who feels the need to school me on A. How to be a better snowboarder, B. Who feels my ass to tit to waist ratio isn’t satisfactory or C. I need to be a better person in general (as aren’t fat people supposed to be super bubbly? I may not be quite bubbly enough). My “weight” is no longer  a problem for me, subjectively to ME. I was bullied for 10 years, painfully so to the point that now, aged 23 I am only just feeling comfortable in my skin. The point of the matter is, thanks to my Italian ancestry I have a very, shall we say, womanly figure. However Boys, I challenge you to measure your arm muscles against mine, my legs which are strong and powerful will carry me across this world without an ache or pain. So the point is, it serves you more than it does me, for you to say I may not be fat in the regular world but I’m certainly too fat to be an athlete, well you can -insert other “f” word-off. All girls should feel empowered to be doing anything that is out of the norm, fat, thin, tall short or whether you have a third nipple or 12 fingers and the people around them should send positive vibes and nothing else.  If you want to spend the day training with me and still tell me I’m no athlete then I’m in Breuil-Cervinia snowboarding, or if you think I have a pretty face but its a shame about the body, I invite you to watch me twerk up a storm in the club with my gorgeous back side or you just can leave me alone as anyone who doesn’t see the inside beauty then we wouldn’t get along anyhow.

Hey everyone,

I will begin by saying it appears as if I am a rather terrible “blogger”, I mean I have started wearing glasses (as sadly I am going just a little blind) but I don’t wear an over sized scarf, carry my phone in my hand 24/7 with my handbag gently resting on my mid arm, nor do wait for gaps in conversation to talk about how enlightening writing a blog is and how its helped me get in touch with the “real me”. However at least I need to remember; TO GET PEOPLE TO READ THE BLOG, I SHOULD PROBABLY WRITE SOMETHING EVERY NOW AND AGAIN! For those of you who do read my blog, firstly thanks once again, also I am sorry for neglecting WordPress for the last month. My s*** has just got crazy. everything has taken off in a wonderful direction and I am awfully grateful.

I take off to Italy in just 6 days so obviously I am so stoked and just trying to get my life together so I am ready to pick up and relocate again for the next 6 months. In the mean time I have many loose ends to tie up.

I have started working with an amazing new company and I am over the moon to be affiliated with them. FATMAPS, well I should probably let them explain-

“To get the most out of the outdoors, we need to be able to answer the unique and personal questions we all have every time we start an adventure. How steep is that hill? What’s over that ridge? Will that area be in the sun for a spot of lunch? The amount of information we have about an area and how understand the terrain we travel in are both fundamental to the necessary experiences we all want, need and have in the outdoors.

At FATMAP, we’ve built the world’s most detailed 3D outdoor mobile maps. By creating 3D models of mountainous areas, we’re profoundly changing the way we understand the terrain by offering new ways of extracting the terrain information we seek. These models then become the perfect vehicle for delivering area, expert and sport-specific data with every piece of information being geo-referenced, context-specific and created & updated by a community of experts.”

The wonderful team over at FatMaps have enlisted me with the task of putting together the info on pistes around Champoluc, as well as some of my favourite freeride routes around. You could soon be downloading the app to try your own hand at my signature freeride routes.  You can download the app for free and then choose your resort. More destinations coming soon I might add so watch this space. On the Thursday of the Ski and Snowboard show I will be hanging with them at the 3 Valleys Press Conference.

This year I will be heading to the British Ski and Snowboard Show. As a kid, I used to love going as a guest but now I get to be there as a pro, going along with the wonderful Caxton FX  bank. I will be on their stand in London; Friday and Saturday, getting to talk to all you lovely people about freeriding, why the Caxton Card rocks my world and also doing the Flip Card challenge. I am very excited to see what the future brings with Caxton, they are an awesome company to be affiliated with and who knows, maybe that could develop into something more. Come and visit us on the stand if you are around, it will be super fun!

This does mean I will be jetting off to Italy to have a few days shred on the glacier before I come back to merry old London town for a few fun days mincing around the Ski and Snowboard show like I’m some kind of Legit Pro, rubbing shoulders with Aimee Fuller, Jamie Nicholls and Jenny Jones. Well the British public don’t need to know I’m not quite in their league, so between you and me ssssshhhhhhhh Angelica Sykes is the next big thing in British Freeride champions.  😉 HA! #sorry #noactuallysorry

Check out this edit from my summer of training. Hopefully it will inspire you to get out there and get active. Preparing for the winter season isn’t just about saving all the precious pennies to pay for your season pass and beers at apres ski. If you also wish to through yourself in the balls deep powder then you need to build your strength. There are a variety of ways to do this, getting to the the gym and focusing on the weights is of course one fail safe method, howeever if you, like myself love the outdoors then there is no better gym than natures. Yoga, running and biking are just a few of my fun and free suggestions.

I also recommend you check out the Ski Club’s tips for ski fitness here, as well as checking out my favourite tutorials with Austrian snowboarding legend and my hero Bibi Pekarek.

Get out there, get active and get your body ready for the insane amounts of snow, dancing and silliness that will happen this winter.

Find the balance, Cardio v Strengh- Summer Training

Bardolino, cardio, Cross Trail Biking, europe, fitness, freeride, good vibes, Italy, Lago Di Garda, Meditation, mountains, MTB, nature, outdoors, positivity, strength, Training, workout

image image image image image image image image image image image image image imageAs you have all probably seen on social media, well, I say that as if you all are my loyal and avid followers and literally sit and wait for me to post something which I highly doubt. 😉 As you all have lives but a gals gotta dream.

Any how, I was going to say of course it has been no secret I am loving learning more about yoga but there has to be a balance between cardio and building Strengh. To get to the physical level I want to be at I sadly have to be willing to get to that point where you are crying inside but because there are other people around you pretend that you are really enjoying the head to toe pain. I like to call it game face!

However yesterday was a cracking day. I have always been a big fan of mountain biking but thought road biking was a little dull. If you put the right scenery behind you then it becomes a real pleasure. We cycled from Malcesine to Lago Di Tenno, North of Arco and man it was a sweet ride. 27 km to Riva then the continuous uphill climb of 10km to Lago Di Tenno then down and back again. 70km in total for the day but don’t feel to sorry for me, I had plenty of cold draft beer at the end of the day as a treat. I felt strong and super stoked at the end of the day, I felt happy to be back in the mountains and back to real nature but also a sense of adventure. It was such a fun day so I’m dying to share the pictures with you guys.
