Right, that’s it, I’m done, I’m out. I want to send an automated response email out to life that reads simply, “Gone Snowboarding- Expect delayed response, but don’t get your hopes up, see ya PEACE.”

DSC08118-2

I am so tired. I thought I would be totally fine working without a day off for 7/8 Months but it’s officially hit me. It will all slow down in October as I finish helping my parents out at their business and I will just be working with the charity and a few other social media jobs which I will say I LOVE. I am not for one second suggesting I don’t want to be doing what I’m doing, I am so lucky so work with some amazing brands helping with them get their message out to the world and I am so stoked to keep working with them until the cows come home.

BUT

I am hearing that call of the mountains. It’s literally all I hear day in day out. The other day- This is the most bitch ass story every- I saw a really cool photo of the Matterhorn and I CRIED LIKE A LITTLE BABY! Not one sorry trickle down my check while listening to cold play “Fix You”, nah, it was full blown tears.

Being home has taught me so much about myself, I have not spent this much time in the UK since I was 17 and that was 7 years ago. I am driving my parents mad but I have loved being with them, they are legit awesome people. I am also so grateful for finding the jobs I did, I didn’t have to work in a dead end job I hate for the summer, I have done something I love but I am ready for my next adventure.

That’s all really, all I wanted to say. The countdown is on, this weekend in Germany with my gal Kate Brady, then to Malawi with @LoveSupportUnite and then chilling at the ski and snowboard show with my pals at @snookswear and @fatmap.

Will be snap chatting the heck out of the beautiful cities on Bonn and Cologne this weekend and getting massively snap happy in Malawi so follow me on Instagram and Snapchat!

Summer Training- Part 2. The Plank Challenge.

activity, adventure, fitness, health and fitness, snowboarding, sport, Training, women in sport

Hello there folks,

How is everyone? Well I hope. I thought it was about time to check in with my Summer Training Update Part 2. This is totally something everyone can try and is NO WHERE NEAR AS HARD AS IT SOUNDS.

Recently, on Facebook the world record holder in the plank position showed up on my news feed, it’s like 8hrs or something crazy and I was flabbergasted to say the least. I struggle with my current timings of like a minute so that sounds just mental. Then later purely coincidentally I saw a post about planking for some seconds every day to improve toning and over all vitality. I read it and thought I would customise it to my own training standards (helping get Ski Season Ready). I personally do other exercise as well to aid in free riding but this is totally up to you, it’s simply a hopefully, helping suggestion.

So first before I tell you how to start the plank challenge, let’s review why it can be  beneficial for you:

1.) Planking is a body weight exercise that requires no money investment, very little time, no equipment and allows you to see the results happen in a short space of time. That’s all the key ingredients of a good “workout” right? It’s certainly speaking my language!

2.) Planking, in conjunction with many other muscles, allows you to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Your abdominal muscles help strengthen your back and help protect against injury. In the snow sports industry, your back its suck an easy area to damage, so theoretically speaking, strengthen your tummy, help protect your back.

3.) Improve posture. This is ideal for skiers and snowboarders, as better posture means again, spinal strength and another step in the right direction of preventing injury.

4.) Planking is an excellent position to improve balance. Balance is the magic word in skiing and snowboarding. Having total strength and awareness of every muscle makes you so much more adapted to harder tricks and general over all agility in your descent, whether you are on piste or off. This is why I still profess every snow sport enthusiast should be supplementing their days on the hill with a short yoga session. But continuing on that theme, planking helps you isolate your abdominal muscles, your lower and upper back along with your bum! It helps you build on your balance through that inevitable, yet satisfying burn of holding a body weight exercise position.

5.) Get sweating! I don’t know about you guys but planking can certainly help me work up a sweat, especially if a full mixed position 20 min or so work out. Sweating when exercising for me, has a direct line to that illusive part of the brain that releases all the happy hormones. One way to help me feel in control, happy and poised is exercise. Sometimes if i need a little boost, I don;t need to go do a 60 min work out, I can simply do some of my favorite yoga poses or plank for a few minutes. This helps make me feel grounded and overall improves my personal vitality.

Okay so, sounding good so far? I haven’t lost too many of you right? Well then, let’s explain how you can get started right now. Do variations of these poses for as long or as little as you like. Do only a few of them or do all of them.

1.) Basic Plank- Down on your forearms, BUM DOWN and toes on the ground, Nice strong line and hold. Min 20 seconds. increase the amount of time the more confident you get or the more time you have.

Rest 10 Seconds

2.) Basic Push up Position- Palms on the ground, press up position, BUM DOWN and toes on the ground. Nice strong line and hold. Min 20 seconds. Increase the amount of time the more confident you get or the more time you have.

Rest 10 Seconds

3.) Twist Plank- Take the principles from Basic Push Up and twist your hips from side to side. Don’t dip all the way to the ground but stretch left to right so you can feel your external obliques (The lower side muscles in your tummy).  Min 20 seconds. Increase the amount of time the more confident you get or the more time you have.

Rest 10 Seconds

4.) Raised Leg Plank- Take the basic principles of the Basic Plank and swap between raising your left leg then your right leg. Keep your weight nice and grounded through the foot touching the ground and the raised leg should be extended out nice and strong.

Rest 10 Seconds

5.) Side Plank- This one is a little more tough balance wise. However once you have it, its great, its probably my favourite now. Keep one palm down on the ground nice and sturdy. Eg, start with left hand palm down then with stability and strength place the left foot on it’s side and stack the right foot on top. Then right arm up in the air, shoulders in line. Then swap over. Another variations of this include; Incorporating a great yoga position is to raise the top foot and leg to a 45* angle to the grounded leg- If you can, grab your big toe of the raised leg with your peace fingers on the extended arm.

My gal @erinellisx showing us how it’s done in Italy. Looking super strong, toned and fit!

THAT IS IT! There are of course many more variations of plank but this is my favourite sequence and already after a short amount of time my stomach feels leaner and it’s great to do while watching a bit of Netflix!

explore, snowboarding, Travel

I am on SNAPCHAT!

I could leave it there, you know “I am on Snapchat, that’s it, the end!” But no, that’s not how I roll!

I am legit excited about this and I wanted to share it with all you beautiful and most radical blog readers, all 5 of you. I spend so much time on Snapchat and on social media in general both with work and with my own platforms as an athlete. I have the virtue of seeing how the industry moves and how quickly it changes. Now I love my socials, they all serve a good purpose, Facebook is for sharing all sorts of stuff I see, interesting snow sports content. Twitter is for interacting with my fav people and brands and Insta, well Instagram is my pride and joy. I work really hard to keep everything looking smart and to ensure the pictures really embody who I am as a rider and as a person. But Snapchat, that little wiley minx, is truly the instant social media app.

I love seeing what everyone is up to, especially like my yoga hero’s or other sports people. It also feels so personal when someone snaps to you or when you interact with your followers. I always snap people back if they send me a snap, well I certainly try! So add me, ask me questions, let me know what you are up too but also you will get to see what I am up to on the daily.

Whats coming up?

I am heading to Riva Del Garda for a week of filming on Yoga, Running, SUP and MTB. Through August I will be posting plenty of good foods from my new collab with a certain brand- which I will tell you about very soon. I will be training in Yoga, weights and cardio and then in OCTOBER I AM HEADING TO MALAWI ON A VOLUNTEER TRIP- More info of which is coming very soon so watch this space! THEN!!- Its time for the ski and snowboard show with the lovely people at @fatmapski and @snookswear (follow them on insta) and after I’m off back to Cervinia to start filming immediately. I will be tearing up that glacier like a vegan taco! ARGH CAPITAL LETTERS TO CONVEY MY EXCITEMENT AT HOW MUCH IS GOING ON! This winter is going to rock on so many levels.

Join me on my journey, lets be adventure buddies and get ready for the winter together.

Filming, Riva Del Garda- Summer Training Edit

activity, adventure, fitness, health and fitness, Italy, snowboarding, sport, Summer, Training, Travel, vegan, women in sport, Yoga, yoga lifestyle

Hey everyone.

I hope all is well. I am so excited about this project I have been working on and I just had to tell you guys all about it! I have created a brief for you guys to have a look at so you know what’s coming.

Now some of you will know that a good few years ago now I lived and worked in Riva at the northern most tip of Lake Garda. Last year I was of course in Bardolino but Riva will be where my heart lies. It is steeped in natural beauty and with a wealth of culture and undeniable summer vibes, I simply had to head back there for my next filming project.

This summer, I am making a real focus towards health, well being and vitality. Riva was always a place where  felt all those concepts came together. Don’t get me wrong, within the context on “Summer Training” I don’t train like this all summer, but the edit will show some activities you can do to stay fit and healthy during the down season. You don’t need the literally incredible back drop of Lake Garda for running, yoga and MTB but for the purpose of project, it certainly helps.

I will be blogging, Snapchatting and instagramming the whole week so I hope you beautiful people will come with me on my adventures. Add Snapchat “Angelica Sykes” and follow me on Instagram @angelicasykesuk.

I am also really stoked to hang out with a coll crew. With a couple of my besties living out there, I simply can’t wait to kick back and enjoy a little slice of summer heaven with them!

Layout and Over View:

This edit will be set in one of my favourite spots in the world. Riva Del Garda is drenched in natural beauty and is steeped in sporting opportunity. At the most northern point of Lake Garda it has ideal conditions for some of my favourite sports. I want the edit to show how hard athletes work in the off season to ensure they stay season fit, this means the summer is really valuable to keep you at the top of your game. I have myself been working on toning up and improving my muscle mass and becoming lighter in general so the activities in the edit will show how to make this happen. The brands involved are ones that share the same love- a love for the outdoors, staying active and being in nature. Sweaty Betty will bring the style element to yoga and paddle boarding, allowing your personality to show with big prints. Vaude makes eco friendly, practical and great pieces for MTB, showing how you can still show your feminine side in a very manly sport. Sungod make the best and most awesome sunnies, you can customise your lenses and frames to match your personality. Naturya will help me show the nutritional back ground to the theme; going vegan was obviously an important progression in my training however it doesn’t mean everyone has to follow suit, although diet and nutrition is massively important in complimenting a great workout regime. The food is incredible on the lake and the wealth of natural, fresh produce is ample- I am thinking fruity morning smoothies and lots of bright and happy food.

Day 1- Afternoon arrival. Jog along the lake front to Torbole then surf club for drinks with the girls.

Day 2- Early Morning Yoga, followed by Paddle Boarding. Wind Surfing in the afternoon.

Day 3- Steep up hill cycle to Lago di Tenno, Swim in the chalk lake. Evening yoga.

Day 4- Early Morning jog as the sun comes up. MTB to “Maroche”- my favourite route.

Day 5- Early morning Yoga by the Bastione (Uphill hike 25 minute for views out over the lake). More paddle boarding and cliff jumping into the lake.

Day 6- Garda Land and the Water Park with the team!

Day 7- Cannoning in the lakes behind Riva.

Home time.

The Valle d’Aosta,

This valley used to be somewhere I just visited with my family while growing up. Every year without fail, heading to my favorite destinations, Champoluc, Courmayer and beyond. My parents certainly fell in love, thus why we continued to go back. My affair began to spark too! I just can’t get enough of the culture, the food, the atmosphere and above all the breathtaking mountain back drop. This is why, no matter where my career as a Pro Snowboarder takes me, I will ALWAYS have a base here, IT IS HOME. Whenever I leave, I leave a part of myself and a part of my history on how i came to me the athlete I am today. If anyone ever asks, why the Aosta Valley, I can refer them to these links.

Vegan Propaganda? How Stupid Do They Think We Are?

exercise, fitness, fitspiration, fitspo, health and fitness, snowboarding, Summer, Training, vegan

Okay, I guess I shall begin by saying, I have always been a little “mouthy”, opinionated and never shied away from a good old debate. However when I decided to go vegan, I didn’t want to be someone who preached, bullied and rallied to get my point across. I had, and still have blind faith that one day, people will open their eyes to the sad reality facing our planet and our health and wise up in their own time. If I am engaged in conversation I will gladly say my feelings and spread by knowledge, which is still VERY LIMITED. Let’s not forget, I am not a nutritionist or a Doctor but what I am is inquisitive; I did my research, I have watched countless educational videos and read countless articles, gathering my information to understand what is truly best for not only my body, but for humanity and planet earth.

If you don’t want me to talk about being a vegan, my health and fitness plan and future as a professional snowboarder ( They are all intrinsically linked), then don’t come to my blog. MY blog is my outlet and my chance to say my opinions, I make no money from it, and none is forced here at gun point.

So let us begin. . . . .

I have struggled with weight gain, issues of insecurity, mild depression and anxiety my entire adult life, since I was bullied for about 8 years. Into adult life I found I could never satisfy myself, satisfy my soul. Since going vegan, as brief has that time has been, I have had my world turned upside down. ACHE, GONE. DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY, GONE. EXCESS WEIGHT, DROPPING OFF. MUSCLE POWER, HEIGHTENED. SKINCARE, HAIR AND NAILS, STRONG AND VIBRANT. CONSCIOUS, CLEAR. All thanks to a plant based, clean eating vegan lifestyle.

So this blog entry is going to be a long one, so strap in, get comfy and let’s review together as the naive, stupid and uneducated people, The Daily Mirror thinks we are, If you haven’t seen the article in question, it’s entitled “Why you really can eat fat to lose weight”, page 26, written by Caroline Jones with “factual” contributions from Zana Morris.

This idea of eating fats to lose weight is picking up pace in the popular media, and why wouldn’t it; it facilitates us eating high fat, nutritionally weak foods while soothing our conscious about eating animal products. To someone who is blissfully unawares,  this article glamorizes- eating full fat milk, cheese and butter to aid a weight loss diet, and more alarmingly, recommended to type 2 diabetes sufferers is just awful. I am gob smacked that this bullshit got published AS THIS WHOLE ARTICLE REVOLVES DIRECTLY AROUND THE IDEA THAT PARTICULARLY, HIGH FAT DAIRY AND MEAT IS GOOD FOR US? Wonder who funded the research? The totally independent and non bias health food industry not at all subsidized by the agricultural industry or the supermarkets?

“The National Obesity Forum” and “Public Health Collaboration”are suggesting all of what we have been told before about healthy eating is incorrect, and the food industry has held the truth from us. That is correct, they fail to mention all the additional hormones, steroids and effective poisons that are added to high fat foods, namely animal products.

The article continues and goes to say the message could not be more clear, “A diet rich in full fat dairy, such as cheese, milk and yogurt can actually lower your chance of obesity”. Funny that when one of our primary sources of saturated fats in the UK diet is from dairy? Obesity is a epidemic facing the UK and many other European countries. Bare in mind every EU member state produces dairy, Milk for example attributes to 15% of the value output and we are arguably one of the globes most notable power players in dairy market, being renowned around the world for cheese production, French, the Italians, the Swiss. Could it not be possible that they want you to continue to buy milk- therefore find niche arguments to suggest it’s amazingly good for you like some kind of miracle food like this article suggests. Not only that they have very few regulations on the use of additives and hormones; if your average farmer knew this, may they not as human beings want to make money and therefore try to increase productivity by adding hormones and antibiotics into the milk for example? (Just to clarify, I am a massive EU supporter, it’s not only in the EU, the whole agricultural industry is terrible in my opinion and we truly don’t know how farmers get their cows to produce lactation for 4 whole years, is it by chemicals or by rubbing their chin and telling them how cute they are.)

The article demonizes carbs, it keeps saying LOWCARB; they do clarify that carbs and not all bad yet do not make the distinction in what is good and what is bad. Let us not make the mistake of grouping fast food chain chips and homemade roasted sweet potatoes or white cardboard bread and gluten free bread filled with whole grains and seeds into one group. Why is a low carb diet suggested to be the glitter floored path to redemption?Natural carbs like rice or potatoes allow our body’s to take the glucose from the food and convert it into useful energy, to fuel you throughout the day. However advocating animal products, like cheese and butter, saying that these foods are recommended for diabetes sufferers, dare I say this is-fucking lies! Is it not known that diary disrupts the productivity of the liver and panaceas by slowing absorption and secretion, therefore making imbalances in hormones?

NB. I cut out diary and my so called hormone imbalance that caused my acne, strangely disappeared, I wonder- *does jazz hands* HOW ON EARTH THAT HAPPENED!

Apparently, insulin is the “FAT” hormone. Is it not damning and dangerous to use this connotation. When actually insulin has nothing at all to do with fat and everything to do with sugar.  Insulin- if you didn’t already know from GCSE Biology; is the hormone which helps your body take sugars from carbohydrates occurring in everything you injest. Insulin helps keep the blood sugar at a equilibrium and help prevent HYPERGLYCEMIA OR HYPOGLYCEMIA. So it’s about fat? Did I mention FAT in that explanation?

The last direct quote I had a an issue with is: ” Dietary fats, however, requires several complicated steps to convert to glucose, therefore doesn’t trigger a direct rise in insulin at all”- NO SHIT you dingbat, not a direct rise as you so eloquently put it,  but it just fucks with your hormone balance in a slow and gruesome way. Spikes and troughs in insulin is caused by processed sugars, we all have sustainable rises and dips in insulin levels when we eat and or are hungry or have just eaten, that is not abnormal you pleb! Who is this women. When you consume animals products with a comparatively low value nutrition, your body stores the fat for the long term. Our body likes to store complex fats like diary for the long haul in case we suffer from famine or a period of starvation, leaving it with a fat dense reserve to use as survival energy. AWESOME RIGHT, YAYYYYYYYYYY KIMK ARSE COMPLETE WITH CELLULITE AND WOBBLE.

I literally have so much to say about this article, just writing this blog entry is making my head want to explode, there is so much wrong with it that any positive info is overlooked due to the sheer magnitude of it’s lies and propaganda. Just check out their idea of a ideal days eating; (All the while- AVOIDING AT ALL COSTS, FRUIT AND MOST VEGETABLES, SEEDS, GRAINS, BEANS- AS SWEET BABY JESUS THEY CONTAIN THE DEVIL FOODS, NATURAL SUGARS AND CARBS-insert sarcastic British accent and patronizing head tilt and eye twitch.)

Example Day:

Breaki- scrambled eggs with butter and cheese.

Lunch- A whole tub of full fat cottage cheese, walnuts, pine nuts and celery

Dinner- Pan fried steak with melted Boursin cheese, spinach and butter.

Oh, they are not total monsters, you are allowed certain greens and cauliflower! Oh thank god right!

SOOOOOOOOO, that’s where I am.

I feel this goes against so much rational and forward thinking regarding what is best for the human body. Truth is, what works for me, may not for everyone, I know the vegan diet isn’t plausible for everyone and it will take time for the British supermarkets to catch up with us, not to use animal by products in every other product on the shelf. But one thing I do know, is that consuming fats, the likes of which we just don’t know enough about them to recommend so passionately, can only lead to another cog in the great problem. People don’t know enough about good food and what’s sad is a I see a niche group in America and Australia certainly, trying to promote veganisum, but never have I seen a notable vegan doctor, nutritionist or expert, ever feature on “Good Morning Britain”, “BBC” or in ANY newspaper. Doesn’t mean it isn’t a life style worth exploring or a topic for interesting debate, but doing something as simple as going vegan, serves to make no one any profit but does so much for the planet which seems to be the least sexy dietary option.

Going Vegan, Yoga and My Summer Training-Part 1

activity, adventure, body image, bodypositive, cardio, girlpower, good vibes, gym, health and fitness, lifestyle, positivity, running, snowboarding, Training, Travel, Uncategorized, vegan, wellbeing, winter, wintersport, women in sport, workout, Yoga

Hey wonderful people.

It had been just too long. I am so sorry I have been totally MIA recently, I have completely neglected my social media but it’s okay because it think it was totally needed. I was having a tough time at the end of last winter, many issue with my own well-being and mental strength and the future for my competitive career.  I was so eager to come home, get back to my sanctuary, with the family and in control of my own destiny again. So after a few weeks at home and I can come back to you guys fresh faced and ready to go.

Okay so I make a little check list in my mind, what I needed to address in my life in order to move forward and be the best version of myself I can be.  On the list was:

1, My out look and general well-being

2, My diet for building strength and training regime

3, Yoga and exploring the possibilities

4, Social Media

Not a very long list, but a list where all topics could lead to a happier and healthier me.

I will be talking over all these topics in the coming weeks but I wanted to take this particular blog post to talk about my decision to go Vegan.

Not one I took lightly, this is whole heartedly been the second best decision of my life, after deciding to take part in competitive big mountain snow boarding of course. I know I am only 2 weeks in but I could not be happier. I had a few courses of inspiration, the first were my good friends Ninni and Marta. These girls embody everything that is beautiful about vegan-ism and a general overall yogic lifestyle. These girls are beautiful, lovely skin, killer bodies but also kind natured, selfless and a pleasure to be around, I think being a vegan promotes a sense of greater understanding; for not only the environment but the value of life. The second inspiration was Full Moon Yoga retreat. Although, over at Chalet Rosiere you don’t eat exclusively Vegan, (we do have some light diary products)- the vibe, promoted by the gorgeous ex model and yogi Alex Volkers and her hero of a hubby Philip Volkers- they made their own probiotics, almond milk and explored the French Alps for the best health food shops, to ensure a balanced diet was served at their blissful retreat without needing meat or fish. Thirdly I discovered Yann Arthus-Bertrand- a documentarian, a humanitarian and my life’s inspiration. After watching all volumes of his documentary “Human” and then “Home”, a learned of the value of Human life, the preservation of our world and species, along with the enlightenment of our impact on the planet. With some self discovery, the realisation of my environmental impact came hurling toward me. Now I don’t have a car, I live in the Alps in the Winter, I recycle and I wouldn’t have said I was a massive contributor to the issue, but I realise it’s that mentality which has caused to much harm. Now adopting a Vegan diet to aid my summer training regime, I now know how to do my little bit to help save the planet; I save 1100 gallons of water 10lbs of CO2 emissions and one animals life PER DAY. To me that is more than good enough.

So what am I eating, well luckily my mum instilled within me a passion for food and cooking, safe to say I have not suffered. I have greatly enjoyed trying new ingredients and replacing protein etc with new experimental ingredients. Chia seeds man, who knew! I have attached some pictures so you can see:

Friday Fun Day- Summer Training

Bardolino, fitness, freeride, freeride world tour, good vibes, gym, Italy, Lago Di Garda, lakegarda, Meditation, mountains, MTB, nature, offpiste, positivity, powder, snowboard, SUP

So, I trust everyone is having a wonderful week and enjoying the summer wherever you are. Just a quick update about what I’ve been up to this week. Tuesday was day off, and it was INCREDIBLE. I’m a bit of a theme park nut, so what better place to head than to GardaLand. It produced everything it promised, awesome rides, adrenaline and plenty of cold beer.

However I feel I earned a day of indulgence as I’ve been pretty dedicated to training so far, my roomie and I have been enjoying some intense late night runs. image image image image imageWhen it is coolers, but still pretty hot, we head to the lake front and enjoy the incredible sun sets over the lake while trying to keep the days food down and sweating perfusely. I do understand why so many people love to run, I may not enjoy it while its happening, (while is happening it’s torturous) but after you feel on top of the world. Between that and yoga I’ve been trying to work on my zen and surrounding myself with positivity and getting a good old sweat on with some cardio.

This afternoon, my friends and I went straight to the lake after work to enjoy an afternoons SUP. It was super fun, the weather was perfect, the water was calm and we had a great time. I didn’t feel like I do after run, like I need a good nap, but I surely felt happy to be back on a board and enjoying nature out on the water.

So that’s pretty much me updated, but I will be dropping info soon about sponsors, it’s literally all about to kick off man!
