“The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind & the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life.” ~ B.K.S. Iyengar

Yoga has transformed my life. Since I began my practice just shy of 3 years ago, it seems so many nuances, areas of pain and anxiety and feelings of insecurity I had have slowly begun to disperse. Yoga and all it’s awesome power have helped me deal the life long issues I have with anxiety, through the power of breathing and taking time for me, I am able to remedy my “flare-ups”. Not to mention how fantastic is it for snowsports. Ironing out aches and pains and helping you connect to every muscle.

Don’t get me wrong, Yoga isn’t a cure for everything and certainly not a one size fits all concept, yoga and the understanding thereof opens your mind to possibility and the opportunity to find the right type of practice. Whether you are trying to tone up, build strength, work through problems of just take time for some self-love.

Therefore in the process of finding a yogic mentor, a relationship that is super important to the development of your practice. I have 4 yogi’s that I look too for inspiration, guidance, and spiritual nourishment. I wanted to share the love and the knowledge and hope that they can also help you find your inner peace. I will try and keep the wishy washy language to a minimum and not get to melancholy!

YouTubers

  1. Where is all began for me was with a humble YouTube channel that has grown to incredible heights and I can’t help but feel proud.

Screen-Shot-2015-02-13-at-14.42.27.png

Name-  Adriene Mishler

Channel- “Yoga With Adriene”

Things to note – Best for beginners to intermediates, people finding their yogi rhythm.

What to expect– Adriene had me captivated from the first time I sat down and did a 15 minute intro video with her catchphrase, “find what feels good”. It could not be more perfect. Adriene makes the videos easy to follow, simple and fun as she moves through the poses, encouraging you to learn as you go and find what feels good and works for you, she had compiled 30 day blocks, a series of sorts, which is perfect to create some structure. Fantastic for an intro the the breathing techniques too!

2.)  As I grow in skill and confidence, I always look forward to time on the mat with this teacher, helping me expand my horizons.

Name- Erin Sampson

Channel- “Five Parks Yoga”

Things to note- Best for intermediates to advanced yogis. She moves quickly through the poses and the practices tend to be longer and a little more intense.

What to expect- Erin is a wonderful teacher and if you open your heart and your mind, she can be a great guide while you find your Om shall we say. My sister introduced me to both Adriene and Erin and as my sister developed her practice so did I. We did a session together not so long ago and I practiced for the first time with “Five Parks Yoga” and it was amazing. The fast paced way Erin moved through the poses really keeps you on your toes, it keeps the entire practice very exciting- Your mind is entirely focused on the positions and therefore is a real escape from reality and the world around you. Highly recommended as a way to expand your practice, learn some new poses and explore. Her latest series is 10 minutes blasts which are perfect if you are busy!

About- 18 months ago when I was lucky enough to take part in the Chalet Rosiere Full Moon Yoga Retreat, hosted by my friends Alex and Philip Volkers and I was introduced to Kelly as the instructor who would be guiding us through the week. I didn’t know then that I would continue to follow Kelly avidly on social media and still use so many of her incredible techniques in my solo practices. Kelly who is the founder of the successful “Klub Yoga”, she is no stranger to the London Yoga scene, where you will find her whizzing around the city teaching all over daily. If you get the chance to take her class, you will be mesmerized by her attention to detail, soft and nurturing demeanor. She absolutely sweats good vibes, can I say that? Well I am going with it! Be sure to take one of her Klub Yoga classes where she mixed the evocative sounds of Odesza and other deep house classics to her Vinyasa flow.

Find Your OM In The Mountains At Chalet Rosiere In February And March

skiing, skitouring, snowboard, snowboarding, Uncategorized, vegan, Yoga

Hello Everyone,

15027562_972296582875888_7501516280900716852_n

I hope everyone is well. Last year, although the season was pretty turbulent with weather etc, there was one week in the season that stood out the most. It was a week of total relaxation, wonder and adventure and combining my 2 favourite things, Yoga and Snowboarding are synonymous with Chalet Rosiere. The deep house Yoga retreat last march was truly magical and now the countdown to this years retreat has begun.

This winter, working with the wonderful Alex and Philip at Chalet Rosiere  and the team behind their retreats, I want to invite all you guys to take part in this unique experience. Let me tell you a little more about the retreat along with some mesmerising images that will inspire you to join me and other like minded yogis.

“Yoga and skiing or snowboarding are increasingly paired together for their complimentary effects on body and mind. Our skiing and yoga retreats combine yoga and meditation with skiing and snowboarding, in the charming resort of La Rosière.”

The Location

Set just outside the main centre of La Rosiere, Chalet Rosiere offers a really special landscape and setting. The Chalet is picture/postcard perfect, the kind of chalet you image in romantic images of the alps, combing original architecture with a few modern fixtures that blend seamlessly with the mountains, the building itself is enough! The rooms are cosy as all heck, pair that with unforgeable views- it’s a winning combo. The communal areas are also seriously special! There is no better place to relax and unwind after a hard days skiing!

The Food

“We’re passionate about food. Everyone loves a gourmet holiday, but to make the most of a mountain holiday nutrition is also important. Mountain sports are energy intensive and very demanding on your body.

Skiing is all about the great outdoors, but when a ski holiday’s all about partying and overindulgence it can be hard to connect with the magic of your surroundings. If you’re looking to progress as a skier or snowboarder, or at any mountain sport, you need to be fit and in the zone.

That’s why we’ve designed two menus for you this winter, both with mountain sport in mind. Introducing the Gourmet Savoyard and the Vegan Detox menus. At our luxury catered chalet you will be able to choose one of these two gorgeous set menus. Both celebrate local produce and strong, elegant flavours.”

The Yoga

With a sense of mindfulness and self awareness, the retreats offers you the chance to reconnect with the earth. What better place to become close to nature than in the mountains. “Yoga retreats in France are world famous for remaining loyal to the holistic teachings of yoga. France is birthplace of bohemianism, the fountainhead of truth, beauty, freedom and love. Our yoga retreats in France offer a heady mix of mountain wilderness, holistic massage, a Vegan Detox menu, mountain sport and heart-nourishing yoga and meditation. We give you fitness without sacrificing soul. Our winter and summer yoga retreats in France are timed to coincide with the full moon. It is an awe-inspiring universe we live in and the full moon is a symbol of that wonder. Celebrate wilderness and adventure with us on one of our luxury yoga retreats”.

I am so tired. I thought I would be totally fine working without a day off for 7/8 Months but it’s officially hit me. It will all slow down in October as I finish helping my parents out at their business and I will just be working with the charity and a few other social media jobs which I will say I LOVE. I am not for one second suggesting I don’t want to be doing what I’m doing, I am so lucky so work with some amazing brands helping with them get their message out to the world and I am so stoked to keep working with them until the cows come home.

BUT

I am hearing that call of the mountains. It’s literally all I hear day in day out. The other day- This is the most bitch ass story every- I saw a really cool photo of the Matterhorn and I CRIED LIKE A LITTLE BABY! Not one sorry trickle down my check while listening to cold play “Fix You”, nah, it was full blown tears.

Being home has taught me so much about myself, I have not spent this much time in the UK since I was 17 and that was 7 years ago. I am driving my parents mad but I have loved being with them, they are legit awesome people. I am also so grateful for finding the jobs I did, I didn’t have to work in a dead end job I hate for the summer, I have done something I love but I am ready for my next adventure.

That’s all really, all I wanted to say. The countdown is on, this weekend in Germany with my gal Kate Brady, then to Malawi with @LoveSupportUnite and then chilling at the ski and snowboard show with my pals at @snookswear and @fatmap.

Will be snap chatting the heck out of the beautiful cities on Bonn and Cologne this weekend and getting massively snap happy in Malawi so follow me on Instagram and Snapchat!

A walk into the UnKnown

IT IS ALWAYS WORTH IT

Progress. . . The F word doesn’t scare me anymore. It has a new meaning. . . Fitness.

activity, adventure, body image, bodypositive, health and fitness, healthy, lifestyle, Meditation, ski, skiing, snowboard, snowboarding, social media, Travel, Yoga, yoga lifestyle

Athlete, What does it mean. “WHO AM I. . .I DON’T KNOW”. -Insert Zoolander-

It is a question I have pondered many times before. I always felt a little wince inside me whenever I refereed to myself as such, not truly believing that I was one. Not only that but thinking people would look at me and not believe it. That was why I wrote those articles back in November when I had a run in with 2 people who said I was “too fat” to be an athlete.

But anyway, I wrote that article, you know the one, if not scroll down to older posts “The F word” so empower myself and others. We need to strive for overall health and vitality and not an idea of skinny or some kind of body goal. This message is all encompassing for people who are physically fit and are damn proud of a high level of fitness but people pick holes in their body shape.

Well I feel like I can finally say I am past ALL OF IT. Call me fat or don’t. I mean those who do, will get one of my famous scowls and a speech about how they perhaps need to look internally to understand what drives them to comment on superficial things like body shape but even if people say what an awesome body I have, thanks but I am not sure I need you to say it anymore.

Yes I have lost a lot of weight recently, not deliberately but through vegan eating and a new workout routine, I have just become more toned and everything is becoming that little bit, shall we say- tighter. I am stoked of course, not because I wanted to loose weight so badly but because I am striving for better health. I feel so light on my feet at the moment and the world has become such a bright place, “Oh pipe down you hippie lefty”- right? People normally tell vegans to pipe down when we start to talk about this kind of thing but you are reading this because you are interested?- well vegan eating cleared my achy totally!- it has helped me create new muscle definition, I feel generally calmer, mood swings are non existent and I feel so strong and genuinely POWERFUL.

With the continuation of my yoga practice, meditation and a state of mindfulness, paired with the clean eating (well most of the time) and little to no alcohol has lead me to a place of bliss.

What I am ready for now is to hopefully inspire others to become self aware, mindful and peaceful from within. I am also ready to smash my up coming projects. I am heading to Lake Garda in just a few days, after that I have the volunteer trip to Malawi, then the Ski show and finally winter begins. All is well.

I AM ON SNAPCHAT- It’s happening in a big way.

explore, snowboarding, Travel

I am on SNAPCHAT!

I could leave it there, you know “I am on Snapchat, that’s it, the end!” But no, that’s not how I roll!

I am legit excited about this and I wanted to share it with all you beautiful and most radical blog readers, all 5 of you. I spend so much time on Snapchat and on social media in general both with work and with my own platforms as an athlete. I have the virtue of seeing how the industry moves and how quickly it changes. Now I love my socials, they all serve a good purpose, Facebook is for sharing all sorts of stuff I see, interesting snow sports content. Twitter is for interacting with my fav people and brands and Insta, well Instagram is my pride and joy. I work really hard to keep everything looking smart and to ensure the pictures really embody who I am as a rider and as a person. But Snapchat, that little wiley minx, is truly the instant social media app.

I love seeing what everyone is up to, especially like my yoga hero’s or other sports people. It also feels so personal when someone snaps to you or when you interact with your followers. I always snap people back if they send me a snap, well I certainly try! So add me, ask me questions, let me know what you are up too but also you will get to see what I am up to on the daily.

Whats coming up?

I am heading to Riva Del Garda for a week of filming on Yoga, Running, SUP and MTB. Through August I will be posting plenty of good foods from my new collab with a certain brand- which I will tell you about very soon. I will be training in Yoga, weights and cardio and then in OCTOBER I AM HEADING TO MALAWI ON A VOLUNTEER TRIP- More info of which is coming very soon so watch this space! THEN!!- Its time for the ski and snowboard show with the lovely people at @fatmapski and @snookswear (follow them on insta) and after I’m off back to Cervinia to start filming immediately. I will be tearing up that glacier like a vegan taco! ARGH CAPITAL LETTERS TO CONVEY MY EXCITEMENT AT HOW MUCH IS GOING ON! This winter is going to rock on so many levels.

Join me on my journey, lets be adventure buddies and get ready for the winter together.

Filming, Riva Del Garda- Summer Training Edit

activity, adventure, fitness, health and fitness, Italy, snowboarding, sport, Summer, Training, Travel, vegan, women in sport, Yoga, yoga lifestyle

Hey everyone.

I hope all is well. I am so excited about this project I have been working on and I just had to tell you guys all about it! I have created a brief for you guys to have a look at so you know what’s coming.

Now some of you will know that a good few years ago now I lived and worked in Riva at the northern most tip of Lake Garda. Last year I was of course in Bardolino but Riva will be where my heart lies. It is steeped in natural beauty and with a wealth of culture and undeniable summer vibes, I simply had to head back there for my next filming project.

This summer, I am making a real focus towards health, well being and vitality. Riva was always a place where  felt all those concepts came together. Don’t get me wrong, within the context on “Summer Training” I don’t train like this all summer, but the edit will show some activities you can do to stay fit and healthy during the down season. You don’t need the literally incredible back drop of Lake Garda for running, yoga and MTB but for the purpose of project, it certainly helps.

I will be blogging, Snapchatting and instagramming the whole week so I hope you beautiful people will come with me on my adventures. Add Snapchat “Angelica Sykes” and follow me on Instagram @angelicasykesuk.

I am also really stoked to hang out with a coll crew. With a couple of my besties living out there, I simply can’t wait to kick back and enjoy a little slice of summer heaven with them!

Layout and Over View:

This edit will be set in one of my favourite spots in the world. Riva Del Garda is drenched in natural beauty and is steeped in sporting opportunity. At the most northern point of Lake Garda it has ideal conditions for some of my favourite sports. I want the edit to show how hard athletes work in the off season to ensure they stay season fit, this means the summer is really valuable to keep you at the top of your game. I have myself been working on toning up and improving my muscle mass and becoming lighter in general so the activities in the edit will show how to make this happen. The brands involved are ones that share the same love- a love for the outdoors, staying active and being in nature. Sweaty Betty will bring the style element to yoga and paddle boarding, allowing your personality to show with big prints. Vaude makes eco friendly, practical and great pieces for MTB, showing how you can still show your feminine side in a very manly sport. Sungod make the best and most awesome sunnies, you can customise your lenses and frames to match your personality. Naturya will help me show the nutritional back ground to the theme; going vegan was obviously an important progression in my training however it doesn’t mean everyone has to follow suit, although diet and nutrition is massively important in complimenting a great workout regime. The food is incredible on the lake and the wealth of natural, fresh produce is ample- I am thinking fruity morning smoothies and lots of bright and happy food.

Day 1- Afternoon arrival. Jog along the lake front to Torbole then surf club for drinks with the girls.

Day 2- Early Morning Yoga, followed by Paddle Boarding. Wind Surfing in the afternoon.

Day 3- Steep up hill cycle to Lago di Tenno, Swim in the chalk lake. Evening yoga.

Day 4- Early Morning jog as the sun comes up. MTB to “Maroche”- my favourite route.

Day 5- Early morning Yoga by the Bastione (Uphill hike 25 minute for views out over the lake). More paddle boarding and cliff jumping into the lake.

Day 6- Garda Land and the Water Park with the team!

Day 7- Cannoning in the lakes behind Riva.

Home time.

Going Vegan, Yoga and My Summer Training-Part 1

activity, adventure, body image, bodypositive, cardio, girlpower, good vibes, gym, health and fitness, lifestyle, positivity, running, snowboarding, Training, Travel, Uncategorized, vegan, wellbeing, winter, wintersport, women in sport, workout, Yoga

Hey wonderful people.

It had been just too long. I am so sorry I have been totally MIA recently, I have completely neglected my social media but it’s okay because it think it was totally needed. I was having a tough time at the end of last winter, many issue with my own well-being and mental strength and the future for my competitive career.  I was so eager to come home, get back to my sanctuary, with the family and in control of my own destiny again. So after a few weeks at home and I can come back to you guys fresh faced and ready to go.

Okay so I make a little check list in my mind, what I needed to address in my life in order to move forward and be the best version of myself I can be.  On the list was:

1, My out look and general well-being

2, My diet for building strength and training regime

3, Yoga and exploring the possibilities

4, Social Media

Not a very long list, but a list where all topics could lead to a happier and healthier me.

I will be talking over all these topics in the coming weeks but I wanted to take this particular blog post to talk about my decision to go Vegan.

Not one I took lightly, this is whole heartedly been the second best decision of my life, after deciding to take part in competitive big mountain snow boarding of course. I know I am only 2 weeks in but I could not be happier. I had a few courses of inspiration, the first were my good friends Ninni and Marta. These girls embody everything that is beautiful about vegan-ism and a general overall yogic lifestyle. These girls are beautiful, lovely skin, killer bodies but also kind natured, selfless and a pleasure to be around, I think being a vegan promotes a sense of greater understanding; for not only the environment but the value of life. The second inspiration was Full Moon Yoga retreat. Although, over at Chalet Rosiere you don’t eat exclusively Vegan, (we do have some light diary products)- the vibe, promoted by the gorgeous ex model and yogi Alex Volkers and her hero of a hubby Philip Volkers- they made their own probiotics, almond milk and explored the French Alps for the best health food shops, to ensure a balanced diet was served at their blissful retreat without needing meat or fish. Thirdly I discovered Yann Arthus-Bertrand- a documentarian, a humanitarian and my life’s inspiration. After watching all volumes of his documentary “Human” and then “Home”, a learned of the value of Human life, the preservation of our world and species, along with the enlightenment of our impact on the planet. With some self discovery, the realisation of my environmental impact came hurling toward me. Now I don’t have a car, I live in the Alps in the Winter, I recycle and I wouldn’t have said I was a massive contributor to the issue, but I realise it’s that mentality which has caused to much harm. Now adopting a Vegan diet to aid my summer training regime, I now know how to do my little bit to help save the planet; I save 1100 gallons of water 10lbs of CO2 emissions and one animals life PER DAY. To me that is more than good enough.

So what am I eating, well luckily my mum instilled within me a passion for food and cooking, safe to say I have not suffered. I have greatly enjoyed trying new ingredients and replacing protein etc with new experimental ingredients. Chia seeds man, who knew! I have attached some pictures so you can see:

Yoga for snowboarding, a combination that has changed the way I ride.

I am so glad yoga came into my life, a force of peace and tranquillity. I started practising yoga about a year ago, in a time where I felt I needed something to help rationalise, well, everything in my life. After last season, I know my competitive career was a success, I still doubted myself, I still looked for gaps in everything I did, when I should have been commending myself for working hard and reaping the rewards. Yoga helped me look inwards, find the appreciation, the serenity and peace I needed. Separately this winter season where the success and failures in my snowboarding career have been totally different, I again turn to yoga for the support.

Yoga is a way of life, its not Jennifer Aniston drinking vegan smoothies, its not going to a class once a week and saying you got all zen from that 1 hour. Although, I’m sure Kelly would agree, everyone must be encouraged to take part and do whatever they need to do to fit yoga into their lives; but for me as a professional athlete, I don’t want to be a cafeteria yogi, I want to try and embody every aspect to ensure I have all the resources I need to be a better athlete. That is why the yoga retreat really changed so much for me. Being around similarly yogic people and embodying the lifestyle even down to the cuisine and the general “Vibe”, I wanted to carry it on to my everyday life.  What I mean is, exploring the options of a vegan diet, (as vegan as I can be living in Italy and being from an Italian family) certainly cutting out alcohol, allowing myself the sleep I need, being kind and honourable and doing all I can to really dedicate to my practice and clear my mind to let the yoga guide me.

But how does yoga benefit me as a snowboarder? I cant even begin to tell you how much. If I had to summarise my personal discipline (Freeride/backcountry snowboarding) in simplistic terms, you need strength, endurance and a sense of calm and pensive nature. Now, I had really only practiced Vinyasa yoga, but during the retreat, Kelly blew my mind to the wonders of Iyenger and Ashtanga yoga. These practices helped me explore new muscle groups, building on my strength, in the core and in the weaker areas of my arms. The yoga retreat helped me focus on my breathing; at the top of a couloir, about to drop in or while on a competition, I need calm. The focus on breathing and meditation has taught me skills I can use to really centre myself, I can think pragmatically and rationally but not only that, I have learnt to hold my poses for longer and really feel the power of yoga through ever corner of my body.

The retreat certainly inspired and motivated me. I am now equipped with more techniques to go forward into my summer season of training. Not only that but the retreat was sheer bliss, Chalet Rosiere have really got a good thing going, such a prime location, it’s quiet and set back away from the main hustle and bustle of La Rosiere, Ian the chef was on point, every meal exceeding the last and Kelly- well, Kelly is my guide, her calm and serene nature was just what I needed to discover my inner yogi. The combination of deep house too was incredible. Kelly has really given a lot of thought into exactly what house she chooses, eg. Odesza, a group that have very deep and contemplative music and beat was very helpful for when you are practising longer poses.

If you are lucky enough to live in London get yourself to her classes as you well see a new side to yourself and your yoga ability and if you have ever wanted to combine the incredible sports of skiing and snowboarding with yoga then you simply must join on the next retreat, it was a life changer.

In the mean time follow her on Instagram @kellybrooksyoga and the Chalet @chaletrosiere

So, Its bleak, Its really bleak, but yet in a ever positive attitude I am trying to pretend its not happening. I am referring to the snow.

Any snow sports lover will surely be aware of the terrible and barren conditions in the Alps at the moment. Looking out at the mountain sphere and seeing a sight I have never seen in all the years I have been in the mountains. Its a worry that I have that the only explanation is this is the effects of global warming. Anyone who denies that the world is changing isn’t listening to the nature around them. I would consider myself a mountain girl, I feel at home here, I am still learning to read the environment and the nature so that I can achieve the best experience ever; These days when I look out the window I can hear so loud and so clear that something is changing. It should be deep winter at this point in the season an yet I have seen no sights of the winter. However we must make the most of the situation as I couldn’t think of a better place to be than in my home mountain resort of Cervinia, with some awesome people around me.

I have struck so lucky this year with my room-mates, all of whom are super keen and enthusiastic mountain people too- as well as fellow yoga lovers. Some of whom will come and do some of the comps with me, this of course means when the snow hits, the training days in the back country will be epic. On a morning we get up, put a pot of coffee on and tuck into a delicious breakfast, perfect to set us up for the day, we then head onto the mountain to shred everything we can, every feature, every turn and every track we have absolutely destroyed, although this isn’t free ride training directly, I am having a simply blooming lovely time.   The people are so important, its the shred buddies you have around you that make your day regardless of conditions. Until the snow arrives we shall happily sit and wait.

I will give you an update on my new sponsors very soon, until then, Keep the Stoke.

Peace

Check out this edit from my summer of training. Hopefully it will inspire you to get out there and get active. Preparing for the winter season isn’t just about saving all the precious pennies to pay for your season pass and beers at apres ski. If you also wish to through yourself in the balls deep powder then you need to build your strength.
